A veteran producer of gay erotica for over 40 years, Chi Chi's place in the industry is unsurpassed and she is still going strong.
She joined us for a rare interview to reflect on her start in the business, how the industry has changed over the years, and how she hopes to keep going as long as she can.
Could you tell us about your journey to becoming a filmmaker in the adult industry?
I grew up in a very small town in Minnesota called Hibbing, and I was obsessed with sexy men. I used to love going to the local grocery store and thumbing through and sometimes stealing Playgirl magazines.
When I was about 16 years old, I used to drive to Duluth Minnesota to go to the local adult theater and I became obsessed with a lot of the performers. I would then go to the arcade and watch gay movies in the booths. I think I was always a sexually repressed person because of my weight, I’ve always been overweight until like 17 years ago when I lost 170+ pounds.
It was very exciting for me to be at the helm of directing and finding future stars. It’s something I still enjoy immensely today.

You have been in this business for decades now. What are some of the biggest changes you have seen and been a part of? The good and the not-so-good?
Decades, are you trying to say that I’m old? Haha!
Since I’ve been in the business for basically 40 years, so much has changed and it would take forever to even describe all the changes. I don’t know if I’m really happy with the changes, but if something's going to be around for as long as adult movies, some things have to change even though I’m not happy about the changes.
How have you changed? What has been the secret of your longevity and adaptability?
I’ve always tried to adapt to the changes, but my worth ethic is constant. I treat my performers and my crew with the utmost respect because if I didn’t have them, there would be no Chi Chi. What I think is so amazing is that I’ve become and stayed friends with so many of the performers and people that I’ve met in this business, I would consider some of the people my best friends.

What are your thoughts on this age of Fans-based platforms vs traditional studio porn?
Being an old bitch, I don’t really like it that much, but again you have to go with the times. I’m happy that the performers are taking the lead and making amazing content while making money at the same time.
What advice do you have for aspiring performers?
Call me! LoL.
I’m always honest, and I’ve said, from the beginning of my career, that it’s nothing to rely on to survive. It’s something you should do and make a business out of it. If you just need to make some quick cash that’s not gonna last very long.

I’m very spontaneous, and I like to create as it’s happening. I also rely on my…to do what feels right and instinctual. I’m very animated when I direct and I think that's something that the performers appreciate.
I’m also really good at pairing up people, Knowing what turns them on and knowing their limits.

How does Chi Chi LaRue define a true "porn star?"
That is a really tough question. I used to say that if you step in front of the camera, take your clothes off, and have sex, you’re automatically a porn star. I’ve changed my mind a little bit since.
Some of the recent boys that I have discovered, really have to give it their all, make an impact, and become “ a porn star." The ones that are prime examples are guys like Beau Butler, Drew Valentino, Derek Kage, Alan King, and Tony Genius, and so many more.
