Box Office Flops, More Apes, Rebel Moon, Ripped Hollywood Hunks, & More!

I’m your Gay News Guy – this is the news, casual, sassy, unfiltered, and a little tipsy. Ok here’s today’s MOVIE news as I see it!

The Color Purple killed it at the Box Office Christmas Day, making it the highest box office for a movie on Christmas Day in 14 years, and the second-ever highest Xmas Day ticket sales. All this hype makes it a shoo-in in for Oscar nominations…the film was snubbed by the Golden Globes for Best Film.

Aquaman 2 didn’t have such an amazing opening here in the States, but did well internationally. A musical did better than a superhero film? Wowzers… Other box office flops are the new animated film Migration and even Beyonce’s Renaissance.

Speaking of Aquaman 2, that film officially ends the run of the DCEU films, with James Gunn’s DC world taking over. This means a few projects that were in development are being scrapped, with Zatanna officially being canceled. The film was intended to be part of J.J. Abrams's plan to reboot the Justice League Dark Universe. Filming is set to start soon for Gunn’s Superman: Legacy. Another Superman film??? Girl, how many Superman movies do we need????

Star Wars nerds must have money, honey! The prop blaster gun that Harrison Ford (Han Solo) used in the first Star Wars sold for over a million dollars, setting a record for the highest amount paid for a prop gun. How about an auction for Han Solo’s underwear?

Did you see Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon? The story was originally intended to be a Star Wars spinoff, but Disney passed and Zack went ahead and made it a stand-alone franchise, although there are MANY Star Wars-esque elements to it. Audiences are mixed, but he is getting major flack because he is releasing a director’s cut later in 2024. People are saying he’s being greedy by putting out a less-than-great cut (pacing is all over the place) knowing full well that his director’s cut is a better offering, but because he’ll get more money for running both versions.

Scream 7 just isn’t doing well. We know that Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera are no longer in the cast, and now the director has quit saying it was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. Rumors are swirling that unless they pay up and bring back Neve Campbell, the movie may be dead on arrival.

Truth be told, I got lost in the all the Planet of the Apes films. The timeline and reboots all got blurry to me and I lost interest. BUT, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is on the horizon and is supposed to lead a trilogy of new Apes movies. The titles are all blending in too. Kingdom of the Happiest Place on Earth of the Planet Symposium of the Apes. Huh???

Jake Gyllenhaal is RIPPED! New footage from the Road House remake shows us that Jake has been hitting the gym hard. All muscles to fulfill your Jake top fantasies. Yes, please!

Another win for ripped hotties, Zac Efron is getting the highest Rotten Tomatoes score for his new film The Iron Claw that shows him in spandex undies as a wrestler. Our little twink is all grown up. Now let’s get some AI porn of him and Jake together. Slurp!

In movie studio news, Warner Bros is reportedly in talks to merge with Paramount. This is HUGE and could mean more money from our pockets. With the lack of competition between these two studios, content platforms could be priced high. Other critics say that when two major studios merge, the quality of content suffers.

Netflix is helping flops become hits. Total box office bombs M. Night Shyamalan's Old and the Kirsten Stewart-led Underwater have become hits on the streaming platform, as some other older, box office flops. I guess people don’t mind watching terrible films at home!

After six years away from the big screen, Ben Stiller is returning to movies with Nutcrackers, a comedy that has Stiller playing an uncle who has to take care of his nephews after their parent’s death. Sounds hilarious. Though Stiller has been absent from appearing on the screen, he’s been working as a producer for many projects. I’m still waiting for another Zoolander sequel. LOL
