Hey gurl! This week’s brand new episode of Hey Gurl with Jordan Jayro is a special one! I had the rare opportunity to sit for an intimate gossip session with my friend Genie! Genie is a fierce drag queen, and competed on season two of Drag Race Thailand! She made Herstory as the first Indian queen to compete on a Drag Race franchise! Genie also won multiple challenges on her season! She is not to be messed with! We met ages ago through mutual friends and have been good Judys ever since! I’m always nervous when approaching friends of mine to do the podcast, so I was relieved when Genie said yes immediately.

We talked about Genie’s early drag beginnings in Richmond, Virginia! She’d soon move to New York City and perform alongside some of New York’s most legendary queens, Bob The Drag Queen (then known by the name Kitten With a Whip) and Miz Cracker. Genie shared a memory from a night working at the infamous Lucky Cheng’s in New York City. I feel like every New York queen has a crazy story from working there. It’s almost enough to make me fill out an application!

Genie and I talked about running into one another recently at a World of Wonder event, and the anxiety of being the only person in drag in a room full of people. I remember that day, and it was such a relief seeing Genie there when I pulled up. She and I also shared the story of how we met, which may or may not involve me in my underwear. I know what you’re thinking, “Really, Jordan? AGAIN?!” And I can only say that yes I was in fact scantily clad when I met Genie and I regret nothing!

Towards the end of the episode, we had a really lovely chat about the drag experience. We talked about the social game of being a local queen and the power behind holding a microphone. I talked about the importance of hosting in drag and how it is such a coveted position to hold. Genie and I chatted briefly about some of the shady experiences I’ve had as a local queen and the importance of creating your own opportunities. We get really existential and motivational in the last few minutes of the episode. So definitely listen all the way through regardless of whether you’re a drag queen or not. Genie is out here spitting the truth and sharing wisdom with the children!! So take a listen!
