Kramer vs. Kramer For Gays: Luke Evans & Billy Porter Star in Gay Divorce Drama

MOVIES

Fleshbot Gay Pop Culture News.

For decades the top bullet point on the gay agenda was gay marriage —nationally and internationally. Gays the world over were pairing up like the arc was boarding and the rains were coming. Alexa, play "Rain on Me" by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande. But alas, like 50% all other marriages in the US, the gays can't help but also divorce.  (Please see Ricky Martin, Lukas Gage, Matthew Lucas, and many others.) But where has the big screen representation been? It's not real unless there's a movie about it. Now, we get our Our Son, the first big gay Kramer vs. Kramer style film starring gay actors Luke Evans and Emmy and Tony Award winner Billy Porter.

The new drama, written and directed by Bill Oliver, examines the divorce of a gay couple and the battle over their shared son. Billy Porter stars as Gabriel, a former actor who leaves his career behind to be the stay-at-home dad for their son Owen, while hubby Nicky (Luke Evans) is dedicated to his high-profile job in publishing. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2023 and currently has an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes —a gay movie that's actually good, get ready folks. Our Son debuts in select theaters on December 8 and then is available for digital rental or purchase beginning December 15, 2023.

In addition to Porter and Evans, the film also stars gay actors who made the leap from Broadway to film, Andrew Rannells (The Book of Mormon, Girls, Big Mouth) and Isaac Cole Powell (Once on This Island, American Horror Story), as well as acting legends Kate Burton and Phylicia Rashad. Billy Porter is an Oscar away from EGOT status, having won an Emmy for his leading role in the Ryan Murphy drama Pose and a Tony and Grammy for his role as drag star Lola in the Broadway musical Kinky Boots. Luke Evans began his career on the West End (Britain's Broadway) before breaking out in the films Immortals, The Hobbit, and Beauty and the Beast, though this marks one of his first gay roles since coming out. And while it's not a musical despite all the Broadway talent, Billy Porter and Luke Evans recorded an original number for the film called “Always Be My Man,”  which will probably run over the credits in hopes of a Best Original Song Oscar nom. Crazier nominations have happened, especially in that category.
