Why Do We Eat Chick-Fil-A When Its Leadership Remains Anti-Gay?

EDITORIAL FEATURES

Ya'll. I'm worried. Future Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett continues to coyly spout anti-gay rhetoric during her queerings. And as I sit here evaluating America's tolerance for this kind of blatant bigotry towards gay people, all I can think of is Chick-Fil-A. #SouthernerProbs. Infamously, the fast food company's CEO S. Truett Cathy stated in 2012 that his company supports traditional marriage between a man and a woman and that "We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.”

Chick-Fil-A received enough backlash that it felt the need to address the controversy. But the company never actually apologized or changed its stance on gay marriage (the closest Cathy came to apologizing was stating “I think the time of truths and principles are captured and codified in God’s word and I’m just personally committed to that. I know others feel very different from that and I respect their opinion and I hope that they would be respectful of mine.") YIKES!) but more importantly, the third largest fast food chain in America never actually stated that it would cease donating millions of dollars to anti-LGBTQ organizations.

If Chick-Fil-A fell out of favor with gay allies (not to mention gays themselves) following the 2012 backlash and the Chick-Fil-A leadership team's refusal to educate themselves on gay issues, I could sleep at night. My understanding of cause and effect, right and wrong, up and down would be bolstered by the seemingly no-brainer decision for liberals to stop supporting an anti-gay company. But that's not what happened.

In fact, the wokest of all generations - Generation Z - embraces Chick-Fil-A more than they do Nike, Marvel, and even Instagram. On a list of companies most popular with Generation Zers, Chick-Fil-A ranked 11th. Plus the company is doing better than ever financially, raking in almost $11 billion in sales annually.

As someone who hails from East Tennessee, naturally fast food plays a huge role in my life. Hence this article lol. But even I - America's trailer park success story - was able to give up Chick-Fil-A in 2012. People who still frequent Chick-Fil-A like to point out that Chick-Fil-A is far from the only company to harbor anti-gay sentiments. To which I say... k... but it is one of the most visible? Plus, with the proliferation of fast food chicken sandwich options in America, it's also one of the easiest brands to supplement. We vote with our money. Every time someone makes a purchase from Chick-Fil-A, they are voting for discrimination. Is that too crazy to comprehend? What am I missing here?

Basically, if people can't stop eating a damn chicken sandwich to show support for gays, I'm not sure what they can do. With Amy Coney Barrett joining the Supreme Court, the LGBTQ community might be facing some dark times ahead. She's affiliated with the anti-gay Alliance Defending Freedom, and refuses to endorse same-sex marriage in her current hearings. She's the human version of a Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich. Will Americans bite? Lol What a stupid way to end this. UM, SUPPORT GAY RIGHTS. FOR A LIST OF JOE BIDEN'S STANCES ON LGBTQ ISSUES, HEAD HERE.
