The USA's Most Searched Halloween Movies, & Our Gay Take

'Tis the season for Halloween movies! While some of us gays debate if Nightmare Before Christmas or the Harry Potter series are Halloween or Christmas movies, the rest of the nation has chosen what the favorites are. NoDepositRewards.org conducted a study, just in time for the spooky season, to find out what the most popular Halloween movies in the US are. They analyzed 150 of the most popular Halloween movies over the 12 months from Halloween to Halloween. The list was gathered from Vudi, Rotten Tomatoes, and Reader's Digest, and from there, six key terms were researched via Google Analytics to provide the winning list. The results are interesting. What's your favorite? The Exorcist? The Ring? Scream? Well, too bad. Here's the top list and our take on each.

Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice blew every other Halloween movie out of the water with an average of 1,617,308 monthly searches, about double any other film. The original film came out in 1988 and the sequel broke the box office just recently. To be fair, the high amount of Google searches can be attributed to the lead-up to the sequel. The original also ranked top on Netflix. Gay-wise, Beetlejuice is not that gay other than the colorful costumes, the dry humor, and Alec Baldwin in tight khakis. The dinner possession scene when they sing Day-O is pretty gay, but not because it's gay, if that makes sense. For the sequel, we get some eye candy from a youthful ghost, but that's about it. But we like the Beetlejuice version of life after death, it's gaudy, gory, and sassy, just like us gays.

Talk to Me

Surprisingly, this independent thriller ranks second in Googled Halloween movies with about 792,582 searches per month. To be honest, we didn't see it. It's about a group of friends who use an embalmed hand to conjure spirits as a party game, but things go too far. The film was released last year and a sequel has been announced. Since we didn't see it, we can't really comment on the gay factor. Although we have given plenty of handjobs at parties and drank lots of spirits, does that count?

Alien

This movie came out in 1979 and is included on all the top Halloween movie lists, which is odd because it doesn't have anything to do with Halloween other than a scary entity that eats people. But most of you Americans include it on your list! Um, okay! This is the oldest film in the top 5 list. It's not that gay in nature, but a lot of the queer community identifies the central character, Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, as lesbian. Just because she can kick ass, doesn't like makeup, has a cat, and wears tank tops? Stereotype! But there is the fact she is a kick-ass heroine in a horror/action film who doesn't need a love interest to make her storyline valid.

Coraline

Coraline? Really, America? Caroline over Nightmare Before Christmas? Sigh. This movie, because of its dark themes and presentation is considered a Halloween movie. It gets an average of 725,429 monthly searches and had a successful run at the box office recently when it was re-released to celebrate its 15-year anniversary. The gay quotient in this film can be attributed to the fact that Caroline finds solace in a separate universe with an alternate family. How many of us growing up felt like we were in the wrong place with the wrong family because they didn't understand us?

Scary Movie

Ok, what's wrong, America? Scary Movie??? It is searched about 703,963. And yes, it is Halloween in nature spooking slasher and horror films, but on the top list? It spawned four sequels and rumors are a reboot is in the works. Its gay quotient? One of the lead characters Ray is ambiguously gay and each scene has him doing queer-aimed humor that would totally be politically incorrect today. Here are his "gayest" scenes:

What this means is that as a whole, the US is interested in less scary and comedic style "horror" films. With so much going on in the world, maybe that is scary enough.

What is on your Halloween movies list?
