The simple "Hey, how's it going" was a popular choice. BORING! That's like the obligatory "Hello, how are you?" to your Uber driver. It's artificial, has no creativity, and no thought behind it. That's not going to grab anyone's attention. Your first message should show your personality and some effort.

Many users said not to just send a dick or ass pic. While your body parts may be sexy, as far as a first hookup app message, it doesn't say anything about you or convince anyone that you have intelligence. Body part pics can come after the conversation gets going but as a first look? Nah.

A good starting message should include something that caught your eye about their bio and a brief statement as to what you are looking for to see if it's worth pursuing. A little compliment never hurt anyone either. "Hey there, I liked x, y, z about your profile, I'm looking for a, b, or c." Or, "You've got a really great smile, would love to see if we are a match, I'm into casual, fun times." It shows them that you bothered to read their bio and tells them right away what you are looking for.

Naughty talk? Some users say to throw caution to the wind and get right down to being flirty. "Wanna fuck?" was a popular message for a hookup. "Nice ass" or "great body" is a bit objectifying but also complimentary. If you are in a horny mood, getting right to the point in a flirty and fun way can't hurt, and depending on the response, you can find someone matching your horniess even sooner than having to wade through all the pleasantries. Just don't be surprised if some guys find that a turn-off. Although we are all mostly looking for a hot hookup, some of us like to pretend we are polite before unzipping.

Dude, no. Many reddit users said they detest the use of the word "dude." Most of us don't go around saying dude to each other, so why is it so heavily used on the hookup apps? Do we think we sound more masculine? Do we think we are at a frat house? Some users prefer the use of the word "buddy." It's fun, flirty, causal, and friendly.

Some users suggest starting with a joke. We know that a funny personality can go a long way, and we can all use a laugh these days. Just make sure the joke is funny, nothing worse than a bad joke. Some say that humor doesn't read digitally. We disagree. Some guys have made us smile enough to keep a conversation going even if it wasn't the perfect match at first.

Avoid one-word messages. "Sup?" and "Wyd" and "Pics?" are pet peeves among hookup app users. It's lazy and not creative.

On the other side of it, a favorite rejection message to let them down easily was "Sorry, not a match, but hope you find some fun!" Just because it is a hookup app doesn't mean we don't have to be gentlemanly. Just blocking or ignoring a message is rude.
