Movie News: New Harry Potter Footage, Gandalf Returns, & Tons of Horror

I'm your Gay News Guy – this is the news, casual, sassy, unfiltered, and a little hungover. Ok here’s this week's movie news as I see it!

Dolores Umbridge, one of our favorite Harry Potter villains is back! While we love Voldemort, Umbridge was like that sassy old gay guy at the bar that just talks shit about everyone. We love her and her pink outfits. Actress Imelda Staunton has reprised her role to film new footage for Universal’s new Ministry of Magic land in Orlando. It will open in 2025 and have an expanded experience for Harry Potter fans including new rides and exhibitions. It will feature a section of the park that puts Umbridge up for trial. Yaasss, queen!

In other queens coming back news, Sir Ian McKellen has confirmed that Gandalf will be returning in future Lord of the Rings films. While nothing has been set in stone and he hasn’t seen any scripts, he says it is in motion. He will probably see him next in the Hunt for Gollum movie, that’s our guess.

Is Blumhouse in trouble? They had some great hits with M3GAN, Insidious: The Red Door, and Five Nights at Freddy's, but they’ve not had a 2024. Their film, a M3GAN spinoff titled Afraid, debuted this weekend at #9 on the box office charts. Yikes. They also had modest movies like Imaginary and Night Swim, but nothing to celebrate. Their reboot of Exorcist also did badly. Maybe their next horror film should be called BOX OFFICE.

Deadpool & Wolverine, Alien, and It Ends with Us, topped the box office with Dennis Quaid’s biopic Reagan having a strong opening at #4. Labor Day weekend is typically a box office slow weekend, but a biopic about a president at #4 isn’t too shabby. This makes this among the top opening weekends for presidential biopics.

If you stayed home this weekend like we did, maybe you watched Netflix’s Deliverance. Though serious in nature, this horror film had us cackling with some bad dialogue and Glenn Close in low class hair and makeup, smoking and cursing, and getting possessed. It was a fun guilty pleasure but failed to wow critics or audiences. What was she doing in this movie???

In other horror film news, there’s a new Peter Pan in town and he’s kidnapping and murdering. This is another D-list horror movie take on Disney classics. There’s also a Winnie the Pooh, Bambi, and Steamboat Willie out there. Here’s the trailer.

A movie that has done well is Twisters. Even a month after its opening, it did well at the box office this last weekend. Industry says its fun release in 4DX has made it a fun movie going experience that people will go to, even if they aren’t interested in the franchise. Theaters reported sold out 4DX showing over the holiday weekend. Twisters star Glen Powell can blow us around anytime he wants!

Remember Sylvester Stallone’s 1993 movie Cliffhanger? Yeah, we barely do too. Well, over 30 years later, he is reprising his role for Cliffhanger 2. Maybe the studios have seen the success with Twisters and thought an action reboot move way after the fact would be lucrative. Hey, put Glen Powell in that one too and we’ll watch.

First images and synopsis have been revealed for Jurassic World 4, a reboot of a reboot of a sequel franchise. The movie stars Scarlett Johansson, dreamy Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali. Universal promises this will be a whole new story and environment. The studio reveals that this film will deal with scientists racing to grab DNA from three dinosaurs, who have been isolated to an island, in order to create a drug to save mankind. Let me guess, the dinosaurs run around and eat people.

Hottie Barry Keoghan, who ran around naked with a beautiful dick, has joined the Peaky Blinders movie, alongside original star Cillian Murphy. Let’s hope there’s a gay sex scene. Or at least they both dance around naked.

The trailer for Apartment 7A has dropped! If you are a Rosemary’s Baby fan like we are, rejoice! This prequel movie looks good. It stars Julia Garner as a ballet dancer who is willing to give up everything for fame. What really got us going was a glimpse of Dianne Wiest playing the kooky neighbor Minnie Castavet, originally played by Ruth Gordon. She is giving us so much texture of the original version while adding her own spin to it. Please don’t let this movie suck!
