Sam Smith Did NOT Come Out As Semisexual

The media and the queer community have a love/hate relationship with Sam Smith. The English singer first became popular in the UK in 2012, and reached international acclaim with his single "Stay With Me." They also provided the theme song, "Writing's on the Wall," for the James Bond film Spectre, winning him a Golden Globe and Oscar. They have a total of five Grammy Awards.

In 2014, they came out as gay. From then on, their sexuality has made headlines with some critics saying they were doing it just for media attention. In 2017, Smith came out as genderqueer, saying that they felt as much as a woman as a man. Then in 2019, they came out as nonbinary.

Over the last few years, Smith has been raked over the coals because of some of their looks. They have also talked about their body issues and as part of their empowerment, they flaunt it all...to some criticism.

Fans did not care for Smith showing off a lot of skin in their music video for "I'm Not Here to Make Friends."

Then social media really had a field day when Sam walked the runway for Vivienne Westwood for Paris Fashion Week.

This week, Sam Smith made headlines again, but this time, it wasn't their doing. A headline broke out saying that they had come out as semisexual and that it meant that they were bisexual but only attracted to one gender.

Given past headlines, this wasn't much of a stretch. The post went viral and everyone chimed in. Someone posted, "We don't even semi-care." Someone else posted "We don't need new labels Sam, just love who you love." Those were the tame comments. There were a lot of anti-LGBTQ comments that flooded many posts reporting on their supposed coming out. Here's the thing, the post originated from a parody site. Smith never came out as semisexual. In fact, the term semisexual was created by a Tumblr blog that was making fun of the LGBTQ community. People wanting to troll the queer community didn't even bother to fact-check before jumping on the bashing wagon.

So, no, Sam Smith did not come out as semisexual. Just another victim of online hate towards our community. Sorry, Sam!
