The Hot Guys from the Japanese Dating Show The Boyfriend

We know the straights have their hold on most of the dating reality shows on TV. How many seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are there? 245? Gay dating shows are few and far between. Well, one of the few gay shows is picking up steam and has become a fan favorite. Netflix debuted The Boyfriend on July 9th, bringing gay, Asian dating to the spotlight.

Asian programming has become very popular on Netflix, and Netflix has long been a promoter of queer content. The Boyfriend is a breath of fresh air. The few dating shows we have had, have had the same, All-American pretty boys. Here, we see a diverse cast with the show focus on building real connections and getting to know the suitors as people, not just speedo-clad influencers being challenged to lick shots of each other's bodies. This does not diminish the hotness of the cast or the passion in the dating process.

The Boyfriend puts sexy men together in a mansion (yes, we've seen this formula before). Meet Usak, Alan, Kazuto, Ryota, Tae Heon, Dai, Shun, and Gensei, the Asian beefcake that keeps us drooling and falling for. The twist, they have to run a coffee truck, called Brewtiful U, together and working side by side, they get to know each other more to see if there is room for love.

The Boyfriend also breaks barriers in terms of Japanese culture. Same-sex marriage is illegal in that nation. This show challenges traditional beliefs and shows that the younger generation is queer and that they have a place in Japanese society.

There's a slow burn and level of seduction that differs from the other gay dating shows out there. The Boyfriend is subtle but sexy, and the slow build leads to a love affair with all of the men, and not just for their hot bodies. You will need Kleenex to watch this show, but maybe not for the ways that you normally would watch hot guys frolic with each other.
