How Gay Was the Olympic Opening Ceremony? Pretty Gay!

Some of us gays were up to watch the Paris Summer Olympics 2024, some of us just watched it later, some just saw the highlights dragged across social media. No matter what camp you were in, y'all had a lot to say! Leading headlines say that the ceremony was confusing, muddled, and even boring overall. What you can't deny is how gay it was! And yes, there were moments of greatness among this eye-candy mess. Let's focus on the queerness of it all, some say that's what saved this whole mess.

First of all, the opening and closing ceremonies have been worked on for the past 18 months, lead by event designer and queer artist Thomas Jolly. He is no stranger to bringing the gay to the festivities and has incorporated LGBTQ themes into much of his theatre work. He has become a powerhouse bringing his queer style and sensibility to grand events in France, including for the Paris Opera House. An estimated 3 billion viewers watched his opening ceremony.

Though it was rumored before, it was still a nice burst of energy and color when our Lady Gaga took over, singing “Mon Truc en Plumes” while surrounded by dancers in a Marilyn Monroe-style presentation. Kelly Clarkson as the commentator even gasped. Two divas the gays love at the Olympics? Yes, please!

Speaking of divas, you could hear a pin drop even with the thousands and thousands surrounding her as, from the Eiffel Tower, THE Celine Dion made her first performance after her medical diagnosis of Stiff Person Syndrome. She killed it and the gays were slayed. Even Kelly Clarkson shed a tear.

Listen in to some of the snippets from Celine's Olympic take over.

Our leading Olympic gay, Tom Daley, was one of the flag bearers during the opening ceremonies. We are in love.

We will be watching his speedo for sure. He's already made us wet during his pool tour.

Also upping the antie was an appearance by Wicked the musical movie's Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in pink and green, appropriately. No one really knew what they were doing there, but they looked fabulous. Could be because NBC covered it all, and Universal is producing the film. Marketing, sweeties, marketing.

And last but not least, can we say Olympics Drag Queens? A number of drag queens took part in the Olympic ceremonies by recreating a motif of DaVinci's Last Supper. Yes, it caused a stir. Yes, we loved it. A global boycott on the Olympics has already been called for by conservative groups. LOL.
