Gay Gasp! The Devil Wears Prada Sequel A Go!
The gays woke up to an early Christmas today as it was announced that Disney is moving forward with a Devil Wears Prada sequel and that original stars Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt are in talks to return. Gird your loins! It has been 18 years since the film came out and since then has achieved gay icon status with us reciting the fabulous lines, creating an infinite amount of memes, and keep watching it every time it reruns on TV.
In case you've been living under some straight rock, The Devil Wears Prada, based on the novel by Lauren Weisberger, centers around a recent college graduate (Anne Hathway) who comes to work at the prestigious fashion magazine Runway, working as an assistant to the impossible Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). Along the way, she finds her identity and her place at the magazine, befriending a gay art director (Stanley Tucci) while dealing with her snooty office colleague (Emily Blunt). It's impossible to think the film is now considered a classic. The film did well at the box office and made $326 million.
The news just hit so we don't know all the details other than the original producer Wendy Finerman and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna will be returning. Also returning (still in talks) is Meryl Streep as Miranda and Emily Blunt as Emily. Anne Hathaway probably won't be making an appearance. She told E! News "I don't think a continuation of that story is probably ever gonna happen," and that she would rather work on a new project with her costars.
What we do know about the sequel is a loose storyline. We find Miranda Priestly struggling with the decline of traditional magazine publishing. Who reads magazines anymore? While Miranda is a force to be reckoned with in fashion history, how can she navigate new trends in a digital age? Apparently, Emily has found her way as a high-powered executive who represents a luxury brand with major dollars that Miranda needs for advertising. Emily vs Miranda, yasssss queens!
The Devil Wears Prada has also most recently received the musical theatre treatment. None other than Elton John wrote the musical and one of our fave stage divas, Vanessa Williams, is taking on the role of Miranda. Reviews have been tepid. Oy.
