From Fire Island to White Lotus, Our Favorite Pop Culture Moments of 2022

2022 was a whirlwind year for sure. It sometimes felt like non-stop societal mayhem and the constant threat of Queer rights being shattered. But we came out stronger than ever, and not all of it was bad! There were amazing movies, tea-filled scandals, and sexy-ass cultural moments all worth noting and celebrating. Here's the rundown of some of our favorite Queer moments of 2022.

Bad Bunny Makes Out w/Guy at VMAs

Bad Bunny is one of the hottest Queer performers out there, and my gawd getting to see him makeout with a guy on stage on national television was absolutely wonderful. We've come a long way from the ABC cutting away from Adam Lambert doing just about anything with a guy during his American Music Awards performance. With his song Un "Verano Sin Ti" clinching the title of most-streamed album on Spotify in 2022, Bad Bunny is solidifying himself as one of the bassest bitches out there. Woof.

"Fire Island" the Surprise Hit Movie of the Year

The year may have started off with lots of exciting buzz about Billy Eichner's studio-backed, all-gay rom com Bros, but the real gay flick that won our hearts over this year was Joel Kim Booster's homage to Jane Austen's "Pride & Prejudice" Fire Island (streaming on Hulu). It starred Booster (who is in PEAK physical shape), as well as forever-bae Conrad Ricamora and Bowen Yang who continues to make him one of my prime Hollywood crushes.

Tay Tay Drama

Taylor Swift's new album Midnights quickly shot to the top all of the records charts. So much so that her "The Eras Tour" instantly became one of the hottest ticket items in the world. It also instantly became one of the biggest dramas in the world leading to multiple class action lawsuit against ticketing monopoly, Ticketmaster. Whew. The drama of it all! Ticketmaster fucked around with Swift's fans and now the company is about to find out.

Jake Daniels First Out Soccer Player in Decades

Jake Daniels of The Blackpool Football Club became the UK’s first male professional footballer to come out as gay in over 30 years. Before him, the last was Justin Fashanu who came out in 1990. In a statement on Blackpool FC's website, Daniels said, "...off the pitch I’ve been hiding the real me and who I really am. I’ve known my whole life that I’m gay, and I now feel that I’m ready to come out and be myself." I can't wait to see what else this sexy star is gonna do, mainly because I hope it involves me.

Victoria Scone Proposes Live on Canada’s Drag Race: Canada vs the World

One of the sweetest moments in pop culture this past year occurred in the season finale of Canada’s Drag Race: Canada vs the World. Scone started off saying, “When I left my previous season, I thought I had let down the whole world, as well as myself, and I just stand here now so happy with what I’ve done,” she said. “If I could get down on two knees and beg for [the crown], I would.” Instead, she got “down on one knee for a different reason.” Continuing with an audience who was quickly catching up, Scone said, “I would like to propose to my girlfriend, Dani. Because I wouldn’t be here now if it wasn’t for her. She is the better half of me, and I couldn’t have done this without her. So, Dani, we’re probably watching this together right now. Will you marry me?” (She said yes!)

Biden Signs Comes Through for Gay Marriage

Speaking of gay marriage, President Biden came through for the gays yet again! Back when he was just a mere Vice President, Biden famously commented publicly that he supported marriage equality, before then-President Obama had yet to come out with his administration's own stance. The comment nudged him to come out in support of marriage equality as an official stance of his administration and the resulting impact was massive. In 2022, amidst a conservative and potentially compromised Supreme Court, the Democrats came out with the Respect for Marriage Act, which says that all states have to recognize gay marriages from other states, even if their state doesn't allow it. Biden quickly signed the Act into law.

Freed Brittney!

After spending the better part of a year in a Russian prison, Brittney Griner was finally released as a part of a high-profile swap with Russia for arms dealer Viktor Bout. The trade sent a clear message to the world that the Biden administration views a Black, lesbian, two-time Olympic gold medalist as worth such a swap. Griner is the embodiment of what this country can aspire to be, and we're so thrilled she's back home with her wife ❤️

Jennifer Coolidge Gifts Us With Countless GIFs and Memes

Jennifer Coolidge has long been a fave of the gays. When the breeders were saying how hot she was while coining the term MILF in American Pie, gay men loved her for how fabulously she always dressed while doing so. And also lezbehonest: our lesbian fam were probs saying how hot she was while coining the term MILF in American Pie. She's also consistently one of the best parts to the Christopher Guest mockumentaries. Point being: she's amazing. And this year we got to revel in Coolidge in all her quirky, fabulous glory. The Emmy Award-winning White Lotus star came back for the second season of the series and from her performance in this alone we officially have enough GIFs and memes to last us through 2025.
