King of Queer Cinema: John Waters Returning to Directing After 20 Years!

To the delight of his loyal fans, John Waters has announced he’s going to make another movie, almost 20 years since his last work as a director. Waters first made his mark on screen with campy alt-gay films like Pink Flamingo starring Divine, Pecker starring Christina Ricci and Lili Taylor, and of course his most successful and most mainstream creation, Hairspray starring Ricki Lake and Divine.

Waters' triumphant return to the screen will be an adaptation of his book Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance, and will be produced by Water's production company, Village Roadshow Pictures. The book was the writer's first work of fiction in years, having spent the better part of the last two decades focusing mostly on memoirs and essays.

Liarmouth tells the story of Marsha Sprinkle, a suitcase thief who is by and large loathed by just about everyone, including her own family. Marsha garners the nickname "Liarmouth" until one day she finally has to tell the truth. If it's anything like his previous works, readers and viewers alike are in store for one hell of a Queer ass treat.

In an interview with Deadline, Waters said, “Liarmouth is the craziest thing I’ve written in a while, so maybe it’s fitting that my novel was shocking enough to jumpstart the engine of my film career." But don't worry... the years away from the screen haven't made him forget who his audiences are or what we hope to see when we see a John Waters movie, telling Deadline he was, “Thrilled to be back in the movie business, hopefully, to spread demented joy to adventuresome moviegoers around the world.”

Before this, Waters' last endeavor in filmmaking was 2004's A Dirty Shame starring Tracey Ullman, Selma Blair, and Johnny Knoxville, a film that received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA.
