Whether it happened by accident or design, the fact that this year's GAYVN Awards took place the evening before that other majorly hyped awards show showed that the difference between, say, a biopic about the Queen of England and a six-man leather orgy isn't really as great as you might think: both shows had their fair share of overlong acceptance speeches, self-congratulatory bonhomie, and seizure-inducing amounts of popping flashbulbs wherever you looked—though it's safe to say that the crowd at the Kodak Pavilion in Los Angeles didn't find pocket size samples of lube in their goodie bags (did they even get goodie bags this year?), nor were they treated to several onstage stripteases or smoking lounge autofellatio sessions over the course of the show (though we wouldn't have minded seeing Ryan Gosling peeling off that tuxedo and showing us that rather astounding bulge we think we glimpsed in "Half Nelson").

We would have loved to take each and every one of you along as our date, but alas—the seating situation at the Castro Theater on San Francisco was tight enough as it is. So instead, enjoy these photos from the first part of the evening from the pre-show reception at the Cafe on Market Street to the final cosmo-soaked moments while everyone waited in the rain outside the theater trying to figure out how to get to the afterparty on the other side of town. (Yes, we'll be posting afterparty pics too later on today ... we just didn't want to overwhelm you with too much glamour all at once.) And we promise we'll get you on the guest list for next year.
