Our Exclusive Interview With That Most Devious Of Mammals: Deviant Otter

Devin Totter, better known as Deviant Otter, is one of the internet's rising adult stars. Launched just six months ago, his site DeviantOtter.com has become a one-stop shop for the burgeoning Otter movement. If you haven't heard of him or the movement, read on for a discussion of what exactly an otter is and how he's helping to make it into a viable category in porn. Not concerned with the flash and pizzazz of the typical gay porn site, Devin has allowed himself to create content that he wants to see, and in turn, it's brought people out in droves to enjoy his very atypical content. He even gave Fleshbot a shout out recently, branding his dick with the word and sending us a GIF of him cumming to our content. I recently chatted with Devin via Skype and we discussed everything from how he got his start to his "beautiful balls," and even a little attempted diversion on my part into some talk about the Boston Red Sox.  

Vincent Thrice: When did you first become aware of the adult industry and did that coincide with you realizing it was something you wanted to do for a living or were those two separate moments?

Deviant Otter: I realized that I wanted to do porn when I saw my first porn (laughs), which was when I was 14, I downloaded it off Limewire, so it was always something that I wanted to do. When I moved to Boston for school, I ended up meeting the Maverick Men before they were the Maverick Men, so we filmed some of our hookups that we did with other guys, and I just sort of continued doing that after college. I started working at Manhunt, and then I started working behind the scenes on porn because I wanted to learn the business side more so than the talent and on-camera side. 

So it wasn’t until I left Manhunt, on good terms, that I really got involved with my tumblr and posting more stuff, and that’s when they approached me and said, hey should you have your own website, you’re doing something different and not the typical look that’s out there, which is the whole point of why I do my stuff because I feel that guys like me aren’t out there that much. Sorry for that long-winded answer.

VT: (Laughs) Hey, long wind away. So in your own words, how would you describe the otter lifestyle?

DO: Definitely go with the flow, playful, very sex-oriented, I mean, I always have sex on the brain so whenever I… you know, otter is a physical description, but I also think that it’s a personality trait as well too. You can meet a slender guy that’s furry, but when you see a slender guy that’s furry that’s out there grabbing dick in public, that’s what I think an otter is (both laugh). Basically just a playful little hornball. 

VT: So, you touched on this a little bit, but what was it that made you want to strike out on your own rather than work for a company?

DO: I think the biggest thing was insecurities. We all have things about our bodies and our personalities that we’re insecure about and I was concerned that a studio would force me to be a certain way that I’m not. I’m not serious, I can’t take porn serious when the guys are like (makes exaggerated orgasm sounds, both laugh). I couldn’t see myself doing that. I don’t like faking sex and I wanted something real. I wanted it to feel like someone was sitting on the chair in my bedroom watching me fuck this person, or like the person’s actually filming it. I wanted it to be more of an experience than a fantasy. 

VT: I’m going to jump around a bit here, just to keep this line going, but your site’s mission statement is “Real Sex, None of that Gloss.” How does that inform the content you create?

DO: We’re still working on the perfect few words to really brand what I am, because everything’s such a mix and there’s so much different stuff going on. To be honest, I didn’t even know that was one of my slogans, a guy from my team must have put that up. I think they said that because the thing about my site is that I will sacrifice a really good camera angle if it feels really good or I’m in a really good position with a guy. And you know, I get a lot of blowback from some people because they don’t like that style of filming, but I’m not filming a porn, I’m filming a hookup. But it’s labeled as a porn because it’s fucking on the internet.

So, it’s like the studios… I mean, I take breaks and stuff like that, but at the studios it takes sometimes eight hours just to film a half hour scene, whereas with me it’s just two hours, getting the guy comfortable and relaxed and then just having fun with him. There’s no bells and whistles, nothing really fancy about it, it’s just more like what people are doing behind closed doors.

VT: Sure, and I think that comes through in your content, which is great because I think that is what sets you apart.  So, being based in Boston rather than San Francisco or NY, do you find that you’re able to be insulated from the industry mentality so to speak?

DO: Yeah, I think that it’s also, the nature of my site, I don’t really get talked about on blogs much and I’m not really in magazines and stuff, so I am away from a lot of it. If I did live in those areas, I still don’t think I’d be a big part of it. I think I’d be friends with the pornstars and going out and partying with them and stuff, but I don’t think that it insulates me so much as I choose not to be a part of it. I think there’s a lot of things in the industry that I don’t agree with, so I just stay away from that drama. 

VT: You’re definitely not afraid to do things that a lot of other sites consider too taboo, like watersports. Are you disappointed in the lack of such content on other sites?

DO: What I find amazing is that people are acting like it’s something new, or it’s never been done before. When I was reading through a list of reasons why people unsubscribed from my site, some people are saying that it’s too fetishy, or there’s watersports, and yet so many guys that I meet are into it. I don’t know if I just attract watersports sluts or something, but I’ve been peeing on kids… I got kicked out of daycare because I was peeing on my friend under a towel (both laugh). 

I think it’s funny because I’ve never thought of it as taboo. When I was young, sex was very taboo and everything about it was very wrong, so I think that I just kind of developed a mentality that if that’s wrong then everything’s wrong, which made me think that I don’t give a fuck at the end of the day, I’m just going to do what I want, which is to have the sex that I want, and explore my sexuality, and try new things. I like that people are talking about it though because there’s a lot of guys who didn’t know that they were into it until they saw it. I didn’t know I was into fisting and stuff until I saw a porno and was like, what the fuck are they doing? (both laugh). I was appalled and wanted to close my eyes, but I kept looking at, and so I don’t know. 

I find it interesting that so many people find it risqué, like poppers. I get so many people that are like, oh he’s a crack whore. No, so many people do poppers they just don’t include it in the film, they have it off to the side. I’m just not hiding it, I want people to see what sex is actually like.  

VT: Manhunt Daily said that you have, and this is a quote, “one of the more amazing sets of balls that I’ve ever encountered.” Were you aware of how amazing your balls were prior to reading that comment?

DO: You know, I didn’t even notice my balls until I started my tumblr, and I would post pictures, and people would be like, whoa those are really big balls. I’m like a 5’8, 5’9 guy so pictures always make me look bigger, and so I have good size nuts, they just hang because I never wear underwear. So, I never thought they were anything special until people started noticing it, and then I’m like, shit I better milk that (both laugh).

VT: Literally! So, my next question is, I just had to ask, I don’t know if you can see the shirt I’m wearing (I was wearing a Boston Red Sox t-shirt), but what’s up with the Red Sox this season, man? 

DO: You know, I’m not that big of a sports fan, I just wear Boston hats because I always wanted to be from Boston when I was a kid. In Boston, it’s not a fair weather fan, but it’s a representation of the city. Whenever I go anywhere, the B for the Boston Red Sox are so recognizable, so people automatically get that I’m from Boston. So it’s my own way of identifying who I am through where my roots are and it’s also so that when I travel, people will be like, oh, it’s another fucking douchebag from Boston (both laugh).

VT: I’m surprised by the number of Red Sox t-shirts and hats that I see in Chicago. I feel like I’m not alone here, at least in that regard. I grew up in New Jersey in a house full of Yankee fans, so I was alone as a kid…

DO: Awww…

VT: (Laughs) Yeah, but there is some solidarity now that I’m here. So, back on topic, what do you think is the hottest scene you’ve ever done, or maybe top 3 if you can’t pick just one?

DO: I think that the hottest scene that I ever did was my first scene because I was so ridiculously attracted to this kid, he had a fucking nine inch cock, and he was gonna take it raw dog. So it was just such a cool experience, it was like holy shit, I am gonna start putting stuff online. It just made the experience that much hotter knowing that this hookup and this hot, drunken, somewhat sloppy sex is going to be out there for everyone to touch their dicks to. I don’t know, it was just a really cool experience.  

And then, just as far as a rocking my world scene, the three way I did with Alex and his ex-boyfriend Tony Orion. They fucking worked me out. I hadn’t gotten fucked like that in so long. I would, like, try and pull away from that dick and they’d just shove me back on it, it pushed my limits. I love a scene where the guys push my limits and make me uncomfortable. 

VT: Is there anyone you haven’t worked with yet that you’re dying to work with?

DO: Yeah, which is sad because a lot of the guys that I’m into are the gay for pay guys. I don’t care if they’re into it or not, I just want to fucking use their dicks and their holes (both laugh). Cliff Jensen, I’ve been jerking off to him forever. I was out in LA for business with one of the former companies we used to work for, and I saw him and I was just starstruck. I was just like, he’s the most beautiful, trashy thing I had ever seen in my life (both laugh). 

Tommy Defendi I would love to get. We have mutual friends, and I keep telling them to try and get Tommy Defendi to do a scene with my site, but a lot of the studio guys won’t do my site because of the reputation that I have. (Laughs) I texted Bravo Delta right after our scene went out and was like, did you get negative blowback from this? I’m sorry if I ruined your career (both laugh).

VT: Yeah, yes…

DO: Basically, if they look like corn fed white trash, I’m so into it (both laugh). 

VT: Awesome. So my last question is if there’s anything else you’d like your fans to know, or perhaps anyone that’s discovering you for the first time?

DO: It’s not a disclaimer, but my site is brand new, it’s only six months old. I’m still learning and I’m still growing, and I feel really bad whenever I feel like I’ve let members down. It’s really difficult to get a lot of content in the beginning and to keep it continuing especially when I’m still not out there, I’m not as big as other stars out there, so it’s difficult and I’m trying. I just hope that my followers and the people who like my stuff can see that this is a growing process, and that things will be done better in the future, and that I’m in this for the long haul. I really want to give people something amazing and an experience that they’d really enjoy.
