Los Angeles Dodgers Cave to Marco Rubio by Rescinding ‘Community Hero Award’ from Drag Artists and Un-Inviting Them From Pride Night

PRIDE

Queer Politics: two rainbow flags bookending the White House.

If you've ever been to a Pride event in a major city, there's a really good chance you've seen The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. They're a group of drag artists in nun-like outfits, and they're absolutely incredible. In recognition of their almost 45 years of activism and charity work, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were to be honored with a Community Hero Award as special guests at the Los Angeles Dodgers' Pride Night next month. That was all a wonderful showing of allyship from the Dodgers, until Florida Senator Marco Rubio and the Catholic League both wrote open letters to the MLB criticizing the inclusion of The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence as honorees. In a move of absolute cowardice, the Los Angeles Dodgers caved and rescinded the award, as well as the Pride Night invitation.

In a statement on the team's Twitter page, the Dodgers explained their pathetic decision. "Given the strong feelings of people who have been offended by the sisters’ inclusion in our evening, and in an effort not to distract from the great benefits that we have seen over the years of Pride Night, we are deciding to remove them from this year’s group of honorees."

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence issued a lengthy response of their own conveying not only their disappointment at the decision but also a reminder of who they are and what they do. "We are a charity organization and we are human rights activists. Our mission is to uplift our community and all marginalized groups, especially the ones ignored by larger organizations, spiritually oriented or otherwise. We are queer nuns serving our people just as nuns of other cultures serve theirs."

Both Marco Rubio and The Catholic League celebrated the decision, with the latter describing it as a 'victory' on their official Twitter page. It never ceases to amaze me how the Christian Right is rarely ever either; they constantly reject the teachings of Jesus and consistently fall on the wrong side of history.

The reaction from the Queer community was swift with people sharing their outrage and disappointment on Twitter. RuPaul's Drag Race alum Maddy Morphosis tweeted multiple thoughts on the matter, calling out the irony of the Dodgers having the audacity to say their decision was one rooted in a "spirit of unity."

Pornstar Aaliyah Love also shared her outrage on Twitter, reminding her 380,000+ followers that "the sisters ARE Pride."

In a time when we need people to speak up for the LGBTQ+ community amidst a surge in hate from people like Marco Rubio, Ron DeSantis, Marjorie Taylor Green, and the rest of the trash in the GOP, this move from the Los Angeles Dodgers' is notably pathetic. Shame on them.
