Drag Queen Spotlight: Karma Lush talks Makeup, Drag Inspiration, and Being a Bad Bitch

Sometimes she’s good, sometimes she’s bad! This week’s Drag Queen Spotlight is all about the LA diva herself, Karma Lush! Karma is a fierce performer, turning the party all over Southern California! She’s an amazing makeup artist (I mean, look at the material) and she’ll give you splits and dips and twirls and turns bitch. I’m so glad I got to do this interview with her! How did you get your drag name?

I was watching Bad Girls Club season 17 and one of my favorite girls got into a fight and won obviously. She said, “In this case Karma’s name is Bri”. I thought that line was brilliant so I started calling myself Karma. Then I added Lush because I like bath bombs but most of the time people think I’m a drunk, but that works either way.

How long have you been doing drag?

I’ve been doing drag for a total of 8 years. I started performing in HS because the theatre teacher was a lesbian so she said “Get on my stage.” I was NEVER disrespected, but I was always misunderstood.

When is your birthday? How old are you?

My birthday is January 18, and I am 23 years old.

Relationship status?

Me, Myself, and I.

What was your first time in drag like?

My first time in Drag, I had so much fun because I love the transformation aspect of it. My first time performing on stage, however, was a great experience, but also very overwhelming because I was new to performing and I was receiving a lot of attention, which I was also not used to at the time.

What made you want to start drag?

What made me want to start Drag was the makeup transformation aspect of the entire process. I thought it was really cool that you can completely transform a face with just makeup and applying it in different ways. I also always loved dressing up.

Who inspires your drag (celebrities, other queens, etc.)?

Who inspires my Drag is a very tough question to answer. It’s not just one person. A lot of people inspire my drag. Especially when it comes to work ethic and aesthetics. I’m always pulling different references from different artists, whether they are movie, directors, make-up artists, musicians, or other Queens who are very close friends and have made an impact on my life. So it’s very tough to say. Let’s just say there would be a long list of names.

Favorite song/artist to lip sync to?

My favorite go-to song to lip-sync to is “Sorry Not Sorry” by Demi Lovato.

Have you ever hooked up in drag?

Making out in Drag and hooking up in Drag are two different things. No, I have not hooked up in Drag.

What’s your favorite thing about drag?

My favorite thing about Drag is probably the makeup aspect of it, but there are so many different things that I love about it. As an artist, I see myself as my canvas.

What are your hobbies outside of drag?

I’m a professional makeup artist outside of Drag.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve witnessed in a dressing room?

I saw two girls go at it in an argument in front of everybody while we were getting dressed, but that’s about it.

Biggest pet peeve about working with other drag queens?

Just don’t be a dick.

Biggest pet peeve about audiences in nightclubs?

My biggest pet peeve, when performing in drag, do not get close to me while I am performing. If you are on your phone, it better be a video of me and I better be tagged otherwise be present as an audience member, or leave. One more thing, please tip your queens!

Any advice for someone wanting to start drag?

Oh my God! There is so much! Sometimes I still feel like I’m learning new things every day. Practice, practice, practice! Don’t be afraid to try something new in the sanctity of your own home. If you’re not learning, then you’re not doing drag. Nobody else’s opinion matters but your own. What I mean by that is you are going to have days where you might not like your makeup or what you’re wearing or how your hair looks. Your friends, especially the ones that don’t do drag, are going to hype you up regardless. If you don’t like it, then it’s not good.
