Brunch Is Such A Drag! As If Gays Needed Another Reason to Love Taco Bell

DRAG QUEENS

I don’t know when this love affair between the gays and Taco Bell started, but it’s been in existence for as long as I can remember. We joke about how bottoms have to eat iceberg salad with water-based dressing, and tops can eat as much Taco Bell as they want. I don’t know a single gay (vegans aside) who don’t bite their lips and grunt, “omg I fucking love Taco Bellllllll” whenever the chain comes up in conversation. For those of us who enjoy the greener herbs of the earth, Taco Bell has always been a cornerstone of our late munchies. And for the drinkers among us, we’ve all found ourselves stopping in after the bars have closed for some late-night nosh. And when Taco Bell announced they were opening “Taco Bell Cantinas” – TB’s where they also serve booze – it was a truly joyous day! Well, that joy is about to get even gayer, because last week Taco Bell announced that starting in May, the chain will be home to Taco Bell Drag Brunches (TBDB) hosted by drag queen Kay Sedia (love the name) at five Taco Bell Cantinas around the country.

TBDB’s rolled out on Sunday May 1st, which is the only way it should be since Sunday is the holy day for gay brunch everywhere. The first brunch was held this past Sunday at Taco Bell Cantina’s flagship location in Las Vegas, and then will continue through the end of Pride Month (June) at four more major cities around the country. What can you expect at the TBDBs? Well, it wouldn't be much of a gay brunch without booze, so in addition to Taco Bell breakfast (including the new $5 Bell Breakfast Box and new Cinnabon Delights® Coffee), alcohol is also available for purchase, including the required mimosas. It should go without saying that only those 21+ can drink, and should do so "responsibly”.

Host Kay Sedia, originally from Tijuana, MX, is a model, an actor, and a self-proclaimed Tupperware Diva with a love of Tacosor as she writes on her IG page: “TACOS! TACOS! TACOS .” And from the looks of the first event in Vegas, she seems like my kind of queen: funny, lots of great camp, gorgeous lewks, and a fan of delicious food and booze!

But as much as the Queer community loves a good drag brunch, we also love fighting for our rights even more, which is why it’s so great (and important) that the TBDB’s are also fundraisers for the Queer community, specifically the It Gets Better Project. The Taco Bell Foundation has created a grant to expand workforce readiness resources for LGBTQIA+ youth around the globe and each of the TBDBs will focus part of the event on the It Gets Better Project and provide attendees with information on how they can get involved.

"We understand the importance of creating safe spaces for the LGBTQIA+ community and are thrilled to provide a unique experience that spotlights and celebrates the wonderful artform of drag and its influence in culture with their chosen families," said Sean Tresvant, Global Chief Brand Officer at Taco Bell. "Taco Bell Drag Brunch was a concept by Live Más Pride, Taco Bell's LGBTQIA+ Employee Resource Group, which has played a major role in driving awareness of and meaningfully supporting LGBTQIA+ communities both within Taco Bell and the communities we serve and operate in."

Reservations for the brunches can only be made on OpenTable. The rollout for the rest of the schedule is as follows:
• Chicago, Wrigleyville Cantina: Sunday, May 22
• Nashville Cantina: Sunday, May 29
• New York, Times Square Cantina: Sunday, June 12
• Fort Lauderdale Cantina: Sunday, June 26

Let us know if you’re planning on going! Chicago Queers, your city is up next on May 22nd, so make sure you get your tickets asap! I’ll tell you this much: you can catch me at the June 12th brunch in NYC!
