The Movie:

During the 1940s, “cheesecake” photographs of cute gals in sexy peek-a-boo poses showing off their legs and some cleavage made an explosion in pop culture. The popularity of these slightly naughty blondes, brunettes, and redheads continued into the 1950s and early 1960s with the publication of Hugh Hefner’s Playboy magazine. At the time, there weren’t comparable mainstream companions to this type of frisky fun featuring the male form. In 1945, California photographer Bob Mizer took matters into his own hands and began photographing handsome young men wearing tight swim trunks and flexing their muscular bodies. Photographs of the male form could not be mainstreamed like their female counterparts and were thus published under the guise of use for instructional health, fitness, and bodybuilding purposes.

Throughout the years, small posing straps, bare backsides, and finally full frontal nudity replaced the tight swimsuits. Mr. Mizer never had a shortage of handsome men who had no problems showing their stuff for some extra cash. Mr. Mizer had a number of run-ins with the law due to some of the models being hustlers….something he had no control over. Bob Mizer died in 1992. In 1998, all Athletic Model Guild materials were sold to Dennis Bell who is keeping these wonderful vintage photographs and short movies in the public’s eye. Presented here are twenty short films shot by Bob Mizer from 1958 to 1974.

“Slave Market”

Cast: Ray Fowle, Dom McConnell, Reed Philppen, and Andy Martin. Film: Color. Run Time: 11 minutes and 10 seconds. Muscular hunks with smooth bodies and Brill Cream pompadours pose and flex while wearing loincloths. Bob Mizer’s backyard has been dressed to resemble a Middle Eastern marketplace.

“Pose, Please”

Cast: Larry Marrinan, John Tristram. Film: Black & White. Run Time: 7 minutes and 8 seconds. Artist John Tristram (good-looking with black hair, slender/toned/smooth body) is out in the desert with his easel and paint pallet anxious to recreate the surroundings on paper through his talented hands. “Wizard of Azz”

Gary Hammock (good-looking with blond pompadour, toned/lightly hairy body) is wearing some type of goofy looking costume when the Devil (Joe Kiser who’s a good-looking dude with dark hair, tall/slender/toned/smooth body) appears wearing horns, posing strap, tail, and carrying a pitchfork. “Witch Boy”

Cast: Bob Adams, Charles Butler. Film: Color. Run Time: 8 minutes and 50 seconds. The movie opens with a skull and then some dude wearing a tall wizard’s hat thumbing though the book “Formulae: Fairies, Goblins, and Witch Boys”. “Sleeping Beauty and the Beast”

Cast: John Travis, Dick Voldemar. Film: Color. Run Time: 4 minutes and 50 seconds. Cast: Kelly Mangum, Van Duke, Dirk Dearwester, Jim Wilson, Jan Grant, and the A.M.G. Pool boys. Film: Black & White. Run Time: 9 minutes and 50 seconds. The dudes are all toned/smooth here with dark hair wearing posing straps. There’s even a monkey (who I will name “Trixie”) on hand in the marketplace that turns into a strutting chicken! One guy performs all sorts of gymnastic poses before being turned into a black cat. Meow.

“Billy Hawkins Adventure”

Cast: Billy Hawkins. Film: Black & White. Run Time: 5 minutes and 16 seconds. Billy is a good-looking fella with dark hair and toned/smooth/tight/tanned body. He strips down to his posing strap and flexes for the camera while leafing though an issue of “Stag” magazine.

“Go Go Sailor”

Cast: Unknown. Film: Color. Run Time: 14 minutes and 19 seconds. The short movies look to be shot on 8 millimeter, Super 8, and 16 millimeter film and are presented in black & white and color. For being as old as they are, the films look good with just a little minor jumping and scratching from time to time.

The movies are silent and the whirring of a movie projector has been added.

The disc includes an interactive menu, movie selection, behind-the-scenes footage that was recently found from “Pose, Please” featuring John Tristram and Larry Marinam eating bananas and goofing off, two late 1950s model screen tests featuring the same nice-looking dude in a red posing strap, and an excellent slideshow presentation featuring black & white and color photographs from each short movie and additional photographs of Ray Rowle (1958), Forrester Millard (1947), Jim Horn (1966), Jay Howord (1973), John Rivos (1961), David O’Boyle (1974), John Tristram (1957), and the Densman Twins (1967). Poindexter’s Roundup:

The twenty short Athletic Model Guild movies presented here are entertaining and have held up very well over the years. The dudes are appealing with their sexy pompadours and toned/smooth well-oiled bodies. The flexing, posing, and wrestling is erotic and as an added bonus, a number of these vintage hunks appear totally nude. There’s no hardcore sex here although Mizer did film XXX shorts (see trailer for “Hardcore Classics”). The disc has been created with tender loving care which is obvious with the high quality of the presentation. There are plenty of wonderful photographs in the Bonus materials. I Recommend for fans of vintage beefcake.
