Woodhull Freedom Foundation Launches Initiative to Counter Misinformation About Sexuality

LEGAL NEWS STRAIGHT

The Woodhull Freedom Foundation, a leading nonprofit organization advocating for sexual rights as fundamental human rights, has unveiled a new initiative aimed at combating widespread misinformation about sex and sexuality in media and political discourse. This initiative, titled “Fact Checked by Woodhull,” leverages peer-reviewed research to challenge and correct prevalent myths that often underpin repressive policies and negatively impact public health.

Located in Washington, D.C., the foundation has been at the forefront of sexual rights advocacy since its inception in 2003. The recent surge in misleading claims across various platforms has prompted Woodhull to step up by providing credible, researched information accessible via their website.

The inaugural release from the “Fact Checked by Woodhull” series focuses on debunking the myths surrounding the so-called “Pornography Public Health Crisis,” a concept currently being used to push for extensive censorship measures on the internet. Ricci Joy Levy, President of Woodhull Freedom Foundation, emphasized the critical need for factual discourse around these issues. “Over the past few years, a flood of propaganda and pseudoscience has set the stage for repressive policies and poor health outcomes,” Levy stated.

The program is set to expand, aiming to cover a wider range of topics related to sex and gender misinformation. With support from various advocates and academics, Woodhull is enhancing its research team to ensure the factual accuracy and reliability of the information provided.

Critics of the initiative applaud the move as a necessary step towards fostering a more informed public discourse. Nadine Strossen, former ACLU President and author of “Defending Pornography,” praised the initiative.

“‘Fact Checked by Woodhull’ is an essential antidote to dangerous disinformation,” Strossen commented, underscoring the importance of confronting misleading narratives with well-researched responses.

Alison Macklin, Policy and Advocacy Director for SIECUS: Sex Ed for Social Change, also endorsed the new resource. “In an age where reactionary responses often overshadow rational discourse, SIECUS is thrilled to share this evidence-driven resource among community members and advocates,” Macklin noted, highlighting the program’s potential to support effective advocacy against baseless claims.

The initiative seeks to not only inform but also encourage active participation in disseminating accurate information. Woodhull urges the public, especially those in journalism, education, and legislation, to engage with and share the factual content provided by the “Fact Checked by Woodhull” program to combat misinformation effectively.

As the program gains traction, Woodhull remains committed to its mission of defending and promoting sexual freedom as a fundamental human right, emphasizing the constitutional and universal human rights that support their cause. The foundation also relies on the generosity of donors to continue its work and encourages public support to ensure the success of this vital initiative.
