Oliver Carter is a Reader in Creative Economies at Birmingham City University’s Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research. He is interested in how technology can facilitate business opportunities and media regulation.

His investigation into the British pornographic industry influenced the Emmy-winning documentary series Sexposed and the second episode of the 2021 BBC series Bent Coppers: Crossing the Line of Duty. The publication of his most recent book, Under the Counter: Britain’s Trade in Hardcore Pornographic 8mm Films, occurred in 2023, and he is presently working on a second volume.
