‘Being Black in Porn’ Wins Best Documentary at International Film Festival

PORN GALLERIES

Concluding a wonderful Pride Month, the critically-acclaimed Noir Male documentary Being Black In Porn took home the coveted Best Documentary Award at the prestigious Lightbox International Film Festival. Having previously won the Reelout Film Fest 2022 Best Documentary, this marks a great step forward to an even wider audience getting to see this documentary. The film first released its trailer a year previously on Juneteenth to great anticipation for its release.

Directed by Dwight Allen O'Neal, the documentary (a Noir Male Production) explores the ups and downs of what it's like being Black in the adult film industry through the eyes of four Black adult film stars: DeAngelo Jackson, Dillon Diaz, Max Konnor, and director Rock Rockafella. Jackson (this year's Cybersocket Award winner for Epic Ass and the first Black man to win a GAYVN Best Actor Award, as well as Performer of the Year)  is also the film's narrator, as well as Executive Producer.

The documentary explores the ups and downs of being Black in an industry that has historically faced issues of racism. From the fetishizing expectation of a "BBC", to being cast as servants and criminals, to being paid less than their white counterparts, to performers refusing to perform with them because they were Black... Being Black In Porn brings a needed cultural awareness to an art that we all love, at a time when society is trying to address deeply ingrained issues in every medium. But Being Black In Porn doesn't only focus on the industry side of things. It explores their personal lives and how they've been impacted by their careers, their various social media personas, and how they responded to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Max Konnor.

O'Neal was understandably thrilled with the film's win. “I want to thank everyone involved in this project and Lightbox for accepting our feature into their international festival and honoring us with the Best Documentary award,” said O’Neal. “What a wonderful way to celebrate the 1-year mark for the feature, from trailer release to now being a multi-award-winning Best Documentary! Our hope is that our documentary creates a better understanding of gay, BIPOC sex workers and sends a message to everyone that Black Lives Matter everywhere and within every industry.”

DeAngelo Jackson.

Being a part of this documentary also hit a personal-professional chord for Jackson. He was the first Black man to win a GAYVN Best Actor Award, as well as the first Black man to win GAYVN Performer of The Year in 2021, which is the most prized title in the industry. That tracks when we remember that he has also been Noir Male’s exclusive contract performer for the last four years. “I’m humbled and beyond grateful for the film’s continued positive recognition. This being our second ‘Best Documentary’ award is unexpected and inspiring. Thank you to Lightbox for this honor,” he said. “I appreciate Dillon Diaz, Max Konnor, and Rock Rockafella for agreeing to be a part of this project, along will all who spoke their truth for our documentary. What a dream to know it’s reaching an international audience.”

Hopefully this documentary will be viewable to the rest of the population soon, because all signs point to it being one of the next great Queer documentaries!
