In a sweet and succinct Instagram post, Swiss pro-tennis player Mika Brunold has come out as gay. As we all know, gay representation in sports is tough, but it is slowly changing. Not only is this a huge step in the right direction for queer folk in the sports arena, but he is also damn cute, making us look good!

Mika is the 2nd male tennis pro to come out publicly. This time last year, Brazilian tennis player Joao Lucas Reis da Silva came out. Slowly but surely! Mika stated that success isn't just regulated to his performance on the courts, but that success is also about discovering yourself and being true to your identity. Last month, Mika suffered the biggest loss of his career so far when he lost and did not qualify for the Swiss Indoors. Mika has also shared that he has received homophobic messages when he has lost matches.

Mika will continue his Challenge Tour as an openly gay athlete. Using his platform to incite changes in views towards queer folk in sports. His Instagram message is touching: āIām sharing this with you to take a step for myself, but also because I think itās not talked about enough in sports. I believe that in an ideal world, we wouldnāt even need to ācome outā at all. Iām deeply grateful for everyone who supported me. Without you, I would never be the person I am today.ā

A number of supporters and other out athletes responded to Mika's post with words of encouragement and support. Coming out might actually help Mika's career reach even higher peaks. Other athletes who have come out have performed better after coming out. The thought being that a huge weight is lifted off their shoulders, hiding who they truly are. Although the courage needed to face teammates and media as openly queer can also be daunting.
Congrats on coming out, Mika! We see you, we stand with you!
