There are so many things to love about our favorite Christmas and Holiday movies. It's the families gathered together for various weird reasons, like communal support or to help fend off a German monster. It's the food, the lights, and cocktails. It's the traditions we all bring to the table from our individual histories.
And regarding some movies and people's personal tastes, it's all the hot Daddies!
So in this installment of "Christmas Movies Gays Love" (not "Gay Christmas Movies!") let's look at those that feature those older guys who bring out the warmth of the season and set aflame our Yule logs!
A grieving, angry father hellbent on revenge. Lots of action. Christmas. John Motherfuckin' Woo! Add them together, and you have Silent Night, an action-filled chaos opera in which our star, ripped-to-the-max Joel Kinnaman (Altered Carbon, The Suicide Squad), wreaks havoc as he meticulously plans and acts out his wrath on the gang members who killed his son in a drive-by. It's classic John Woo, the Chinese master of action films (Face/Off), of which Peter Debruge of Variety wrote, "Silent Night gives audiences reason to get excited about the Hong Kong innovator once again, ranking as one of the few bloody Christmas counterprogrammers since Die Hard that feels worthy of repeat viewing down the road." Oh, did we mention there's no dialogue, only ambient background natural sounds? No dialogue!!!
Speaking of Die Hard...
Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Don't even fight me on this. And star Bruce Willis, still in his mostly comedy phase with one more season of Moonlighting to go, is poised to become the action comedy star. His inwardly-directed muttered banter as he crawls through ventilator shafts and contemplates a floor of broken glass is as fun to watch as his ass-kicking and his sweaty body stretching that t-shirt to its limit. He's the Daddy you want coming to save you!
Star Kurt Russell is a physical freak of nature, I'm just gonna come out and say it. He was a pretty-boy twink in his Disney teen years when he was making family-friendly TV and films in the '60s. He was drop-dead gorgeous as scruffy Snake Pliskin in Escape From New York or with a bushy beard in the terrifying The Thing. He's handsome as ever but maintained his boyish good looks in the '80s with comedies like Overboard, costarring real-life partner Goldie Hawn, and he was darkly hawt, displaying his malevolence in Quentin Tarrentino films like Deathproof and The Hateful Eight. But in this holiday film for the whole family, he's one of the hottest Santas you've ever feasted your drooling eyes on, with his lucious beard and beefy musculature. And my lord, his eyes have never quit him!
And my personal favorite...
Star David Harbour has been pretty much on everyone's Daddy wishlist ever since his star-making role as Jim Hopper on Stranger Things. Cuz I'm sorry, but that season one scene of him fresh out of the shower in his tightie whities and squeezing into his sheriff uniform is all kinds of softcore Bear porn! (Remember him picking up Jake Gyllenhaal outside the town dance in Brokeback Mountain? No? Time for a re-watch!) His turn as the man in the red suit gives the same kind of dad-bod sexiness and wry humor, but with WAY MORE ass-kicking! And it's a genuinely great movie! When thinking adult friends of mine tell me how much they enjoy it, you have to know it checks all the boxes: hot male star, an intricate criminal plot, an anti-wealth message, an adorable child co-star, a reaffirmation of "the spirit of Christmas, and most importantly, as much his-octane action as, well, as a John Woo flick!
