Gen Z Isn't Having A Lot of Sex...Except for the Gays!
Gen Z, aka the internet generation, aka people born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s, seems to be having an issue when it comes to having sex. Is that why they are in a bad mood all the time? JK. Research has shown that sex among Gen Zers has been on the decline. Many researchers have their theories as to why.
Social media is said to be partly to blame. The Gen Z has their noses glued to their smartphones, being able to connect in a way they didn't have when they were kids. The economy is also to blame. Many Gen Zers are so stressed and filled with anxiety trying to fulfill the American Dream of owning property, even though the reality is that many Gen Zers can barely pay rent, have to work two jobs, or have to move back with parents to make a living. This economy has not been kind to those who saw our parents' generation be able to raise a family on a decent income. Not any more! That kind of financial doesn't make the generation very horny. Other experts think that easy access to porn has decreased in-person sexual encounters. Gen Z is jerking off to a video rather than with a live person. Dating isn't easy, especially in a tech era.
Leave it to us horny gays to skew the evidence. This year, findings from the General Social Survey show that men who have had sex with men have been on the rise since the 1990s. The increase in same sex sexual experiences has a lot of contributing factors. First of all, the acceptance of queer folk has gotten better overall. Over 70% of Americans think that queer relationships are morally and socially acceptable. We are also seeing more positive representations of queer folk in movies and media. It is normal, sexy, and fun to be gay! Tech has also made it easier for people in the closet to connect with others and have sex. The 90s population had Craigslist and chat rooms, making it easy to connect with other gay men around the world. In our modern era, we have hookup apps on our phones. Thank you, Grindr and Sniffies! There's also a bigger acceptance of bisexual folk. Even many Hollywood A-listers have come out as bisexual. Men are feeling more comfortable in exploring their sexuality, even if they don't end up identifying as gay.
According to Pew, 9.3% of adults in the US identify as queer, 23.1 % of those are Gen Z. But there's also a larger population that has had man-to-man sex at least once; that doesn't mean they end up being queer.
So go out and get curious, men! We are keeping sex alive!
