Top Cities For Cruising Men Around the World
It's that time of year when some of us gays are looking to plan our trips for the year. Some of us don't have the family situations for the holidays like others, so we take the opportunity to take a trip somewhere fun. What's a gay trip without a little fun man-on-man action? While traveling to some destinations is a little sketchy for the queer community, there are still some locales that offer some sexy fun in safer spaces. Lucky for us, the German website Erobella just released its Global Gay Cruising Index. The Index rates cities in Europe and North America according to spaces where men can connect in real life, through bathhouses, sex clubs, clubs, and other spaces that are popular for cruising. The cities were adjusted to be proportionate to the number of cruising spaces in relation to the city's overall size and population.
It looks like we US gays are going to have to get our passports in order if we want to go cruising while abroad. The top cities are all in Europe. Get ready for bad food but good hookup sex, London scored a 10 out 10, topping the Index. There are four busy places in this city, in four different neighborhoods, that offer public and club space for fooling around. Put Vault 139, the Lord Clyde, and Pleasuredome Spa Bar on your list of places to visit with lube and condoms in your pocket.
It is no surprise that Berlin came out towards the top of the list. It is well known for cruising with naughty clubs and the leather/kink scene. Many gay fetish lovers travel around the globe to attend the annual Folsom festival. There are very few limitations. There's also the fun in being able to take on a whole new personality when traveling so far; no one knows you! Coming in at third place on the Index is Paris. There are a number of bathhouses and clubs that feature busy backrooms. It is also the city of romance, so maybe your cruising hookup will end up being your vacation romance partner. Now there's a Hallmark movie we want to see!
If you want more bang for your buck while traveling, go visit Spain for cruising. Madrid and Barcelona took fourth and fifth places on the list. These two cities are very popular with bathhouses. And we have been to Spain. Those men are goddamn sexy and so horny!
It is also no surprise that uptight North America doesn't make the top five cities. Cruising can be very dangerous, and sex clubs and bathhouses are not as plentiful. This is also due to the AIDS epidemic. The US shut down public places for sex to reduce the spread of infections. Europe did not. Since then, there has been a stigma towards establishments that cater to cruisers.
New York City came in at sixth place. It made the list because of the number of gay clubs with cruisy environments, like the Eagle. The only other US city to make the list was San Francisco, in ninth place. That is no surprise given the city's queer history and celebration of sexuality.
The rest of the top ten are made up of Vienna, Hamburg, and Toronto. A big surprise was the exclusion of Amsterdam. It used to be a big queer space for cruising; it only earned 9/40 on the Index.
