The Real History of the Prince Albert Dick Piercing

We talk about everything here at Fleshbot Gay HQ. One day, we are talking about fisting, the next we are talking about Robert Irwin going shirtless in Dancing with the Stars - we never know where the convo is going to end up. Well, somehow the chat this last week turned to a Prince Albert piercing. One of our team members had never been with a guy with one and almost chipped his tooth when servicing that dick. For those of you unfamiliar, a Prince Albert piercing is the most common type of piercing when it comes to the male genitals. A dick piercing is made from the urethra to the underside of the glans. For guys with foreskin, it might have to be moved a bit to accommodate the extra skin. Well, we here at HQ all had our own opinions as to the origin of this procedure, made most popular by the gay community.

Such a piercing can cause a lot of pain and bleeding. Healing time from getting a Prince Albert can take 4 weeks to 6 months! So why would someone get one? Apparently, it enhances the nerve endings and thus, sexual pleasure, when having sex. Depending on who you talk to, if you are on the receiving end of a Prince Albert - i.e., sucking a dick or getting fucked by someone with one - the experience can vary. Some bottoms find the piercing uncomfortable. Most guys who get such body jewelry do not often remove it. Once you commit, you need to commit.

So, why is it called the Prince Albert? Prince Albert was the husband of Queen Victoria in the UK in the 1800s. He was known to be fashion-forward, preoccupied with morality, and refined taste. A fancy man! According to myth, Prince Albert pierced his dick to avoid showing off his member in his tight pants. Tight pants were all the rage at the time, so major VPL could be an issue. The legend says that Prince Albert put a ring around his dick and a hook inside his pants so it would keep his penis to one side, along his leg, to avoid popping out. As fanciful as this story is, there is literally no historical record to back it up, and it has since been passed off as just an urban legend with absolutely no truth to the matter.

So where did the name come from? From the gays, of course! Body piercing and the term Prince Albert became popular in the late 70s/early 80s. A man named Jim Ward opened the first body piercing studio in the US at that time. He first opened the Gauntlet in his home and later with an actual studio in West Hollywood, one of the centers of all things queer. To help promote piercing and queer lore, he and his friend put together a pamphlet with made-up names and histories of certain piercings. Thus, the birth of the name of Prince Albert for that type of piercing.

The Prince Albert has been embraced by the gay community as a sign of taking ownership of our bodies and sexuality. Getting such a piercing is certainly a bold statement, and it is considered taking back our sexual empowerment. Though not as popular in modern times, there are still a lot of members of the leather and kink gay community who proudly sport this piercing.

But a word to the wise, if you are on the receiving end of a big dick with this piercing, be careful of snagging and, yes, tooth chipping. Also, if you get such a piercing, you will learn have to pee a bit differently as it will follow the jewelry you have in your dick and could spurt all over. Some guys have to pee sitting down.

Would you get a Prince Albert?
