NEWS & GOSSIP

As reported by Nathaniel Rodriguez and WFLA, the organisers of Tampa Pride have made the decision to put their 2026 slate of events and parade on hold for 2026, due mainly to financial reasons.

A Facebook post from the Tampa Pride Board states the situation thusly: “The current political and economic climate, including challenges with corporate sponsorships, reductions in county, state and federal grant funding, and the discontinuation of DEI programs under Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, has made it increasingly difficult for our organization to sustain ongoing operations for 2026,

It would appear that right-wing, politically-motivated anti-DEI initiatives and pressures are causing corporate backers to back off or reduce their past contributions. Such contributions are vital to the creation, organization, and security of such events.

“We recognize the festival and parade’s significant financial contribution to local businesses and its vital role to our LGBTQIA+ community,” the post reads. “However, this pause is necessary for the organization to regroup, reassess our long-term strategy, and identify additional avenues of funding to secure the future stability of Tampa Pride events.”

The post also recognizes the work of outgoing Tampa Pride Board President Carrie West, whose contract expired Aug. 31st of this year. “Carrie, your remarkable dedication and unwavering service as President of Tampa Pride over the past 12 years have been deeply valued. The Board, Directors, committee members, and the community are profoundly grateful for your tireless efforts and leadership, which have left a lasting impact on our organization and the many events you have brought to the city and county that had showcased our unique inclusive area across the country.”

Anti-DEI moves in corporate America, spearheaded by the current administration, have caused a swath of negative consequences both for the community and for the corporations themselves. While people have lost jobs, others have felt unmoored in their workplaces. And as we've seen earlier this year, many Pride celebrations were rocked by insecure financial backing after large-scale donors backed out, fearful of political repercussions.

On the flipside, the backlash from the community for some companies' new anti-DEI stance has been financial as well. Target, for example, has seen a sizeable reduction in foot traffic and money spent in their stores. According to this Forbes article, the decision to bend the knee to POTUS's executive orders to abolish DEI cost the company's CEO his job, and a loss of $12 billion to investors.

As we know, this will not stop Pride. Pride continues in a variety of forms. We hope and trust that Tampa, and other cities affected, will find their backing and their stride, be they in leather boots or reinforced pumps, and continue marching and fighting for Pride!
