Australian Hottie Mitch Brown Comes Out, Makes Football History

We are glad to share that we are reporting on more and more athletes coming out. There's a rainbow wave happening around the globe in the sports world, and we love the blossoming representation! This week, Australian athlete Mitch Brown came out as bisexual, making him the first male player in the Australian Football League (AFL) to identify as an out queer man. Yes, he is a stud and not hard on the eyes, but beyond that, this is great representation.

Mitch played for the West Coast Eagles for ten years. He reached out to The Daily Aus to share his coming-out story, identifying as bisexual. He told the publication that making the decision to finally come out was quick, "I had this feeling of peace. But, more importantly, comfort and confidence."

The first part of Mitch's coming-out interview is available to watch on YouTube.

He shares that being in the closet trained him to be good at lying and covering up other major issues in his life, such as mental health and anxiety. Mitch posted on Instagram a big thank you to his supporters and those who helped him get the courage to tell his story. He wants to be a role model for those sports folk who might be in the closet. He also posted a thank you to the six football clubs who shared their support of Mitch's coming-out.

Mitch's identity as a queer man makes football history. In the entire Australian Football League's existence for over 129 years, there has never been a male who has come out as queer. 129 years! Mitch is addressing the toxic masculinity that exists as a man in Australia. Being called gay was about the worst insult. He is also talking about the harmful verbiage that occurs in the locker room in regards to the queer community. His coming out will hopefully start a change in attitude and view of the queer community in Australian sports.

Mitch wants to inspire change from the AFL in terms of representation and who should be considered as positive role models. Mitch currently has a female partner and is the father of two sons with his ex-wife. His ex-wife took to social media, stating that their sons would be proud of Mitch's courage.

Yay, representation!
