Upcoming Movies and TV Shows Sure Are Queer, Pt. 1

POP CULTURE

Gay Pop Culture News

Is summer rally on its way out? You wouldn't know, what with temps the way they've been, and how hot some of the upcoming movies and TV shows are! August is usually a hot month anyway, so it's a great time to stay inside with the AC running and some queer content on the tube. Whether explicitly LGBTQ+ related or simply campy adjacent, these titles will delight, inform, frighten, or simply entertain. The Advocate put together a nice selection of titles, from the large and small screens, so let's dive in part one of their collection.

My Oxford Year (now on Netflix)

When Sofia Carson's "Anna" arrives in Oxford for her exchange year, she has her life on track. Then she gets involved with local hottie Corey Mylchreest, and things start to go sideways, romantically and otherwise. Sure, they're centering a straight relationship in all this, so enter Harry Trevaldwyn as "Charles," the ubiquitous gay best friend. Fortunately, it seems that this character is more than just a chatty queen, a shoulder to cry on, and laugh with. As Trevaldwyn explains, Charles is more fully realized than many other side characters who have come before him. So often, especially with queer characters, it’s expositional—delivering a sassy line and walking away. In My Oxford Year, side characters are involved in the dynamics and have their own things going on."

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder Season 3 (now on Disney+)

It's Disney, so originally, the queer content represented by the character of Michael Collins was a bit muted. But it seems they're leaning into it more, making Michael more obviously gay, and including a gay couple with Barry and Randall Leibowitz-Jenkins, fathers to KG and Maya.

Platonic Season 2 (Now on Apple TV+)

It's not super gay, unless you count platonic besties Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne reuniting after a falling out and running around being all kinds of non-sexual fun with each other. Rogen? That doofy Beara hunk? Yes please! Now thrown in hunky Luke MacFarlane and his bodacious bod? YES PLEASE! Check him out in the trailer above!

Wednesday Season 2 Pt. 1 (Now on Netflix)

You're already done with this, aren't you? AREN'T YOU? I know I am! The first handful of episodes was gobbled up faster than eyeballs in a cauldron at an Addams family brunch! Is it explicitly gay? No. Do we all identify with the weirdo aesthetic and outsider status of Wednesday and the rest? OF COURSE! Looking forward to Part 2 of this season drops September 3rd.

Freakier Friday (Now in theaters)

Not here for queer content, but definitely here for pure nostalgia and high camp!

Red Sonja (Now on VOD)

The character has never been obviously queer, but more recent interpretations have leaned into her non-sexual bisexuality. She has come down over the years with a thick layer of leather femme kink and female empowerment, and has zero interest in the male gaze these days. She's heavily queer coded, like "Lord Humungus" in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. Not actually gay, but super gay!

Sausage Party: Foodtopia Season 2 (Now on Prime)

As described over at Out, the various food characters in this franchise are "pansexual, polyamorous, (and) orgy-loving." While I haven't seen the sequel series, the original 2016 film had this grown-assed gay adult laughing his ass off, adn delighted at all the ridiculous, overtly gay content. A lesbian taco (Salma Hayek), various bread snacks, and sausages willing to be buried in any orifice. They didn't care! The new series has all of that, plus a Twinkie-like snack product literally called "Twink." Ya don't get any gayer than that! Oh, and it also has Seth Rogen? Damn, this list gets better and better!

Stand Up To Cancer 2025 Special (Now on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Disney+, Hulu)

You had us at Dolly Parton! This one-night special on the 15th (to be streamed elsewhere later), filmed in Nashville, brings country artists together with doctors, scientists, and survivors. Is it ironic that such a science-based program is held in Nashville? Maybe a bit, but let's not get all Coastie liberal in our assumptions!

The Great American Baking Show Celebrity Summer (August 16 on Roku channel)

Two words: Paul Hollywood. Celebrity contestants include Andrew Rannells, Yara Shahidi, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and June Diane Raphael. But really, it's just about Paul Hollywood. And bakery treats.

Songs & Stories with Kelly Clarkson (August 19 on NBC)

Let's file this under "Stuff queers like to listen to." As described on NBC's page, "In Songs & Stories with Kelly Clarkson, the three-time Grammy winner will chat with Gloria Estefan, Jonas Brothers, Lizzo, and Teddy Swims about music as well as their personal lives, giving viewers a 'front-row pass' at their 'unfiltered' conversations. The four-episode special will also feature musical performances in an “intimate, unplugged setting.”
