HOOKUP APPS

Queer Hookup App Graphic

Get Ready, Grindr Presents Is Here!

We've reported on all of the bells and whistles that Grindr has been adding to the hookup app over the last couple of years. With the rise of Sniffies, Grindr is getting a run for its money and is constantly thinking of ways to improve the app and engage current users and attract new ones. Many of us gays have had complaints that the app is always glitching, and they keep charging more and more for higher membership status and unlimited scrolling. But they have really made some cool advancements - the pic timestamp verification to make sure you aren't being catfished, the roaming and travel features to use while planning your trips, new AI tools being rolled out in beta areas, and the new "right now" feature that makes it resemble Sniffies slightly. The "right now" feature, as we've seen it from our use, has yet to really catch on. Aptly named, the right now hub is to be those used by gays who want to forgo the chitchat and hookup right now. More and more Grindr users are reporting that most guys just want to chat, not actually meet face-to-face. Sigh. This last week, Grindr added yet another feature to the app - Grindr Presents. So what is it?

Grindr Presents is not a separate app or other streaming platform; it lives right in your current app. It is a hub for all kinds of queer content - and it is all uncensored. The content can range from music sharing, original videos, editorials, and so much more - all curated for and by the LGBTQ community.

Think of it as all of your social media apps rolled up in one. Insta, TikTok, and YouTube kind of content can now all be found on the same platform you use to find your next hookup. The app really does want you to visit for a one-stop shop for anything you could want to access. For starters, you can look at produced series like Katya's “Who’s the Ahole?” or behind-the-scenes content from Troye Sivan's music tour to playlists and editorial stuff. The platform promises to share content unfiltered, uncensored, and raw. Is this opening the platform to all kinds of free speech issues? We know that there are crazies out there, and we also know how hateful some from our own community can be. Who decides when content goes too far?

Grindr released this statement: “In a world where queer voices are increasingly censored and marginalized across platforms, Grindr has created an unapologetically safe space where the community can be themselves, be heard, and be fabulous without fear of suppression.”

The intention is to provide a safe space for the queer community, especially in the light of the fact that the government has dipped in its power over queer art, such as programming at the Kennedy Space Center and drag shows. Conservative online laws continue to challenge adult content, which in many loose terms, can mean anything that is queer related. Even sex education and resources for curious queer people. Are hubs like Grindr Presents putting our queer culture back in the closet or keeping it safe? Also, Sniffies has been banned from Apple apps because of a lack of censorship...could Grindr find itself on the chopping block too?

The content can be accessed for free by tapping on the side menu.

Is this something you would access regularly? Do you have any concerns that it is all uncensored?
