Gay Spanish Football Player Alberto Lejárraga Gets Married! Aye!

Aye aye aye! Spain's only out gay football (soccer) player got married this summer, and the wedding pics are hitting the web. Are we jealous? Just a little. Alberto currently plays for the Spanish team UD San Sebastián de los Reyes and has made queer history. The two got married at Hacienda Las Fuentes, in the southern part of the coast of Spain. The couple is currently on honeymoon in Japan, probably making the most of their hotel room. Sigh. Alberto has been posting some of the wedding pics on social media, and they are adorable. We can't even get to Date #2.

Alberto is one of only six out gay football players in the world. We know there have to be more. Come out, come out, wherever you are! Alberto caused a stir when he posted a picture of himself kissing another man (his now husband) while celebrating his promotion to a higher pro league. He didn't come out with a statement of his sexuality, but posted: “Thank you for always being by my side, during the good and the bad. This time it was our turn to live the beauty of this moment.”

The response to the tweet was huge, and it was met with many comments offering support. Later, Alberto made a statement saying he was surprised by the response and stated, “We are very grateful that it conveyed a message of diversity, naturalness, closeness, and the utmost sensitivity.” In later interviews, he talked about his experience with homophobia.

Alberto's husband is Ruben Fernandez, an actor and a musician. This marriage marks the first gay marriage to occur with a male player who is still active. Alberto, in one of his interviews, said that it just wouldn't be fair to him or Ruben to ignore their relationship by hiding it.

Alberto has participated in advocacy, bringing awareness to LGBTQ issues in sports. During Pride Month, he took part in a documentary that focused on queer experiences in the sports world.

Alberto hopes that his visibility can inspire even just one youth to feel confident to be themselves in sports. He hopes that one day we won't even have to talk about queer athletes in sports because it will be normalized.
