Gurrrl, You're Taking Your First Gay Cruise
Because of all the weird political stuff towards the LGBTQ community happening all over the globe, gay travel looks different this year. It also doesn't help the gay travel environment that the economy is messing with everyone's wallet. The gays are being more prudent about their travel, and popular queer destinations are on the decline. Not only is the queer community finding new spots that are more economically and LGBTQ-friendly, but they are opting for experiences they know will be safe. This year, the travel choice is the ultimate gay cruise. There can be no doubt that this choice is queer-friendly, as it is a boat full of gays. You don't have to worry about anti-LGBTQ sentiment or being safe when you are enclosed in a pleasure ship full of guys that want to dance, hook up, and dress up. Though a gay cruise might not be the scene for everyone, at least you know what you are going to get for your money. That being said, many from the community are trying out their first gay cruise, so, of course, we had to put our list together from what we've learned. We've been ass up on many cruise ships. Gurrrl...
Picking the right cruise is essential. Our suggestion is to push your boundaries a bit and step outside of your comfort zone. All gay cruises are a big party, for sure, with all-night events, sexual escapades, and 24/7 gayety. This might be your opportunity to let loose for a week and let your freak flag fly free, and enjoy being someone different in a safe space with tons of other guys doing the same thing. But if that makes you anxious, you might want to look for cruise lines that are LGBTQ-friendly (there are many) or look for a cruise that has a smaller queer group as a charter, not the whole ship. This is your vacation, shape it how you want. You can create your own mix of downtime, gazing out at the ocean, and taking loads on the C-deck. Some of our friends have been nervous to book a cruise because they are single and going solo. Don't limit yourself. We assure you, you will find a new group of friends quickly, if you are open to it. But, again, there are some charters that cater to single people.
What To Pack?
First and foremost, swimwear/poolside wear gets priority. Our number one tip in regards to swimwear is to pack something that you would never wear at home. Get the courage and show it all off. If you are concerned about extra pounds or not being a gym bunny, don't. You will see all shapes and sizes, and it really is about the energy and confidence you bring. Be daring. We recommend packing at least two of each: a caftan for those lazy, hungover days, a fun color/patterned suit to show off personality, and something revealing and naughty.
Our trusty tip is to print out the daily itineraries, including theme parties, daily mixers, and shore excursions. Plan your outfits day by day. The themed parties can get pretty wild, and the sky is the limit when it comes to dressing up. Just be mindful of how much you pack, because you also don't want to be bumping around the airport with a million suitcases or fill your cabin with nothing but luggage with no room to breathe. Put outfits together that can be mixed and matched. Accessories don't take up much room and can add a lot to an outfit while showing off style and personality. Did you save up three months of your paycheck to buy that hot Versace shirt for the club? Leave it at home. Don't bring anything (including valuables) that you can't see yourself losing, getting damaged, or getting stolen. Pack your personality, not your clothing labels; no one really cares - you are on vacation. Pack boat shoes, flip flops, and walking shoes. Those are a must. (Also, splurge and get a pedicure, we are gonna see your feet.) Another great tip we learned, leave some empty room in your luggage; chances are, you will go shopping and need room to bring some stuff home.
Don't forget the gay cruise essentials like your grooming kit, medications (especially the PrEP and Doxy), and lube. To your medication list, add anti-nausea medication, Ex-Lax (some guys get really stopped up while traveling), and Imodium. Illegal substances will also find their way on a ship, but they are banned and can get you kicked off, so take that information as you will. We also suggest packing some fun, personal decorations for your cabin door. Most people will decorate the door leading into their cabin to show off their personality. Get a little dry erase board with a suction cup (they have them at the Dollar Store) so people can leave messages for you. We also suggest packing a cheap cell phone backup. Phones go missing, phones get wet, phones get stolen, but you will need a way to communicate once you are off the ship.
Another great tip: splurge on the room with an ocean view. Inside cabins might be more economical, but you will kick yourself for not spending the extra to see the ocean outside your room. Also, inside cabins tend to be dark and musty. Trust us, there will be moments you will just want to hang out and chill in your room. Or host an orgy.
If you are traveling alone or just with your bestie, say yes to everything! That welcome mixer? Go. That karaoke night? Go. That drag bingo? Go. You will quickly find friends during these events. The friends we have made on cruises have become long-term friends and great companions for future trips. On a gay cruise, the hookup apps will be going crazy. But you have those apps at home. On a gay cruise, there is no need to be face down on your phone. You are literally surrounded by gay guys, meet people in real time, make a real connection, even if it is just for a quick pump and dump.
Party Animal Safety
Drinks are everywhere, all day and all night. It is very easy to get hammered when having a good time, dehydrated under the sun, and sweating on the dance floor. Know your limits. Yes, you are on vacation, but you also need to remain safe and healthy. You also don't want to be that messy queen who throws up all over everyone at 2 pm on the pool deck. Drink plenty of water, rotate your drinks with water, and take a break every now and then. Even though the allure is for the nighttime parties and activities, make sure you participate in the daytime stuff like excursions and get-togethers. Most gay cruises will also offer yoga classes, spa treatments, and have a gym. Mix those in with your debauchery. Also, beware the bar tab. It is so easy to charge drinks to your room, check your balance third day in, you might be in for a shock. The drinks are not cheap. Make sure you can afford rent when you get home. Our biggest tip for drinkers is to purchase open bar tabs ahead of the cruise.
Confidence Is Key.
This is your vacation, own it. Get outside your safety net and rediscover who you are or who you want to be. You are in a safe space, so have fun and let loose. You deserve it.
