Well, we can honestly say that this Pride Month was not without its struggles. While we were proudly waving our flags and dancing to headliners at Prides around the nation, we could still feel the looming presence of the continued political attacks on the queer community. The adult industry is also under continued political aggression, and this week, the two communities suffered a shared blow. On June 27th, just as Pride Month was coming to a close, BananaGuide.com quietly announced that after 25 years, the site would no longer be up and running.

For a quarter century we proudly served gay men seeking honest reviews of adult membership sites. Age verification laws in many U.S. and international jurisdictions have made it impossible for a free site like BananaGuide to continue to operate. We thank the millions of people who have visited our site since its launch in 2000.

For 25 years, BananaGuide.com was a quick stop site for daily galleries, porn site reviews, a blog, and access to discounts on adult sites. For many of us, Fleshbot Gay (previously Cybersocket) and BananaGuide were the first sites we went to when exploring our sexuality. These sites were a rite a passage as we said hello to our gay porn fantasies. But times have changed.

Age verification laws have been a thorn in the adult industry's side for a few years now. Introduced by the conservative side, legislation has been passed that requires any adult site to incorporate an age verification system under the guise of protecting youth from accessing inappropriate material. The verification systems are costly to implement and maintain, and smaller sites can't keep up with the costs. Just today, Georgia, North Carolina, and Wyoming have been added to the growing list of states with such restrictions. Any sites still available in states with this implemented legislation are liable for high fines.

When major sites like Pornhub pull out of states with age verification restrictions, you know there is an issue. This is affecting the industry in a domino effect. Not only are long-standing sites like BananaGuide unable to keep up with the changing laws, but porn studios have been feeling the pressure being put on the adult industry. Budgets are down, staff is being laid off, paid memberships continue to decline, and porn performers are getting paid less for work. For adult blog sites, advertising money is disappearing as presence in restricted states evaporates. We talk to porn personalities all the time, the word on the street is that Fan site income is declining as well.

Why is the closure of BananaGuide such a big blow? The site is gone without any trace of its history. As of now, there is no archive available, and even their social media has been defunct for a few years. There has also been no outrage from the community about the loss of such a big part of gay culture. Gay adult blogs have been a huge resource for the community for years. Not just for jerking off, these sites have allowed the community to explore and celebrate its sexuality in a safe environment, and now it is all being erased. Where's the media attention towards this? Where does it stop?

Even if you don't want to get swept up in the current political fury, it's (pardon the pun) coming for you, now even limiting the porn you can interact with. The terrible thing is the political hypocrisy that comes with these attacks on the adult industry. How many headlines can we read about certain political figures who have been swept up in immoral dealings? But god forbid we should be able to watch two guys go at it in the privacy of our own home. Even here at Fleshbot, we've had to modify what we are putting out there. Yes, we are still putting out hot content, but we certainly feel the breath on the back of our necks.
