These Two Movie Trailers Are Making the Gays Gag

Well, Hollywood certainly knows how to appease the hungry gays at the beginning of Pride season! Let's hear it for all the queer folk in Hollywood marketing who know what we want. This last week did not disappoint in giving us huge box office teasers. We got not one, but two, mega gay movie trailers. And we are gagging. We got the movie trailer for Wicked 2: For Good, and the movie trailer for the other movie musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman starring JLo. So musical theatre gays and pop music gays are in a tizzy with mostly positive comments.

Kiss of the Spider Woman

So, we know that JLo hasn't had the best couple of years in terms of successful projects, personal life, or media love. For some reason, she has been targeted to bring her career down, and many consumers have eaten it up. Remember when we all loved JLo and went to her rom-coms and danced to her Pitbull collabs? What happened? Just because the media says she isn't famous anymore, we must believe it? Anyhoo. This last week, a full movie trailer for the musical Kiss of the Spider Woman came out, and this might change her career around. Imagine if she were pitted against Cynthia Erivo for the Best Actress Oscar? Gurrrllll...

For those of you not musical theatre gays (how dare you), Kiss of the Spider Woman is a 1993 Broadway musical by the legends of theater Kander & Ebb. (Kander & Ebb are also responsible for Cabaret, Chicago, and many others.) The musical is based on the 1979 book by Manuel Puig, and deals with themes of politics and homosexuality. The story centers around two inmates in an Argentinian cell who are complete opposites; one man is a political revolutionary, the other is a gay window dresser obsessed with an actress who plays a surreal part in his imagination. One of the actress's characters that the window dresser is scared of the Spider Woman. In the original Broadway production, the Spider Woman was played by Tony Award-winning icon Chita Rivera. Her character weaves in and out of the storyline with big musical numbers. At first, the two inmates do not get along, but soon, they start sharing life stories and develop a bond. Is it love?

JLo steps into the shoes of the actress, taking on many roles from the movies she's appeared in, with a final appearance as the Spider Woman. We know that JLo can dance, but singing a full musical theatre score? Hmmm...Vanessa Williams stepped into the role of the Spider Woman after Chita Rivera left, and she is more pop than musical theatre. So, maybe? The film had its debut at the Sundance Film Festival last January, and it was very well received. Some critics say this might be JLo's best performance ever. The film will be released early October, right ahead of Wicked 2's Thanksgiving release. The trailer looks lush and very Chicago-esque, and features many of the highlights of the songs from the musical. One of our favorite Latin heartthrobs, Diego Luna, plays the political revolutionary. Check it out:

To be honest, even we hardcore musical theatre fans are titillated by the movie trailer. It looks sleek, it looks sexy, and is a throwback to movie musicals not using CGI (no offense, Wicked).

Wicked 2: For Good

Ok, unless you are a gay Helen Keller, you have to know about the Wicked franchise. Their marketing for the first film was so aggressive, they even had Wizard of Oz dildos. Well, almost. The Wicked movies, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, are based on the Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz, based on the Wizard of Oz books by Frank Baum in the 1930s. The Wicked movies broke up the Broadway musical into two movies, fully fleshing out and adding to the story. Even for non-musical theater lovers, most audiences gobbled up the first Wicked movie. For those of us who know, the second part of the story is very dark and emotional, but also includes the Wizard of Oz story with Dorothy. It will be interesting to see if they can capitalize on the success of the first movie. We do think it may have suffered from too much overexposure in the long run, and the first movie was attractive to most because it was so fun and colorful. But the movie trailer for the second part makes us feel all the feels, it looks dark and sexy and dramatic, just like our ex!

What are your thoughts? Which of the movie trailers made you gag more?
