Anti-Trans Activist J.K. Rowling Still Working Her Wretched Magic

NEWS & GOSSIP

TERF extraordinaire J.K. Rowling is apparently preparing to use her fortune to, you guessed it, fight a villain of her own creation. As reported in The Advocate and other outlets recently, Rowling has announced the creation of The J.K. Rowling Women's Fund to fight against, as she sees it, the trans encroachment into biological women's spaces. (Other outlets have linked to her fund's website. I will not. You can find it if you feel so compelled.)

You may remember last month, the U.K. Supreme Court ruled that trans women aren't women under the Equality Act. This was after the Scottish group For Women Scotland, to which Rowling donated £70,000 last year after it lost its argument against a 2018 ruling that legally recognized trans women as women. It was their appeal to the U.K. Supreme Court that was heard and ruled in favor of.

When that case won, she took to her Twitter account (dead-naming this social media site, yes, is on purpose!) with a pic of her, drink and cigar in hand, to announce “I love it when a plan comes together.” To which our favorite Zaddy Pedro Pascal responded in a comment on an Instagram post that she is a "heinous loser." Pascal, as you well know, is a huge ally of the LGBTQ+ community, especially of his trans sister Lux, making a big splash when he appeared in a Protect The Dolls t-shirt at the UK premier of the Thunderbolts film.

Rowling's website states the mission of the fund is to offer "legal funding support to individuals and organisations fighting to retain women’s sex-based rights in the workplace, in public life, and in protected female spaces."

Pascal has been outspoken in his charge to his fans to not "buy a single Harry Potter thing ever....It’s time to tell these corporations that transphobia loses money." So that means boycotting any future Potter universe merch or content. Yes, that means not visiting Harry Potter World in England, and not signing up for HBO to view the new, upcoming Potter series, for which Rowling is an acting producer and would receive money.

I will admit that I am a bit less hardcore than the above IG post, which states that you can't separate the artist from the art. I believe you can, but within reason. And this is a very personal issue, so do what you must. Have I enjoyed the books, and do I have the original set on my shelf at this moment, which I can see from where I sit and type this out? Yup. Do I think the books have literary merit, including, ironically, all of the lessons about finding one's extended family when you feel like an outsider and are ostracised by one's biological family? Of course. Was I heartened many years ago when Rowling claimed that she always intended Dumbledore to be a gay character? Unfortunately. But will I consume or obtain any future content from this shrill horror of a human? Absolutely not. And if you have to get them for a youngster, a niece or nephew...steal them. But not from an indie bookstore!
