Indonesia Police Raid Gay Sex Party, 56 Arrested! Gurlll...
We thought the US gays were crazy with all of our group sex events? Well, we've just been one-upped by the gays in Indonesia who are making headlines! Police raided a private event in Jakarta that they classified as a sex party and arrested 56 men. Three of those men are facing up 15 years in jail for breaking the nation's current pornography laws.
The three men in question were arrested for organizing the event. The police also stated they found condoms and HIV medications at the event. Even though it was a private event, the men are being accused of facilitating pornography services. The nation has a low tolerance for porn.
Indonesia remains largely religious with conservative groups holding much of the political power. 80 percent of the nation is Muslim. It is not illegal to be gay in the majority of the nation, but there are no LGBTQ protections in place either. Homosexuality is still seen as being taboo. Queer activist groups state that the nation is using the 2008 Anti-Pornography Law to specifically target the LGBTQ community. Over the years, queer events have been systematically raided. In 2017, hundreds of people were arrested over the course of many raids. The move was so drastic that Amnesty International declared it clearly hostile toward the LGBTQ community.

Aceh is a province in Indonesia that subscribes to Sharia law, which criminalizes homosexual behavior. In 2021, two men were publicly caned 77 times after someone turned them in for engaging in gay sex. Also, Indonesia amended its Penal Code in 2022 to criminalize sex outside of marriage. Same-sex marriage is illegal, so any gay sexual activity is technically considered illegal. This law takes effect this year. And, tourists beware, it also applies to tourists!
Aggression towards the queer community has reportedly been on the rise. A 2019 Pew Research Center poll revealed that 9% of the Indonesian population believes that homosexuality should be accepted by society, while 80% believes it should not.
Bali is considered a popular tourist destination. Though Bali is considered more LGBTQ+ friendly, Indonesian law still applies. Tourists are warned to refrain from public displays of affection, even holding hands. There are some gay-friendly hotels in Bali that will allow you to share a bed with your boo, otherwise,e you may be restricted to separate beds. There's an official gay strip in Bali, and a few gay-friendly bars and restaurants. You may even run into a drag show here and there. There are no official gay organizations in Bali. Travel with caution!
