Google Deletes Pride Month
Hey, gays! Don't worry about getting fit for summer Pride, Google has officially canceled it! Google has deemed that honoring certain occasions, like Pride, Black History Month, Hispanic History Month, Indigenous Peoples Month, Jewish Heritage Month, and Holocaust Remembrance Day is "unsustainable." What the hell does that mean? Only public holidays will be included in its official calendar.
This is all just part of the domino effect under the current presidential administration where DEI has been stripped from federal programs. Many have lost their jobs due to the cutbacks and many corporations have also done away with their equality programs, including past Pride supporters like Target, Amazon, and Walmart, among many others. Some corporations are fighting the good fight and sticking to their diversity programs, such as Apple, Costco, and many airlines.
Google defended its calendar updates saying they are focusing on a global scale and can't include every little thing. LOL. Google, Pride, the Black, the Hispanic, the indigenous people, and Jewish communities are not little. We will roar. Google gave $1 million to Donald Trump's 2025 inauguration and its CEO was present for the ceremony. Also, in kissing the current administration's butt, they also renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Making Gulfs Great Again.
Many fear all this cutback to LGBTQ representation will ultimately lead to the Supreme Court repealing same-sex marriages. Besides being a devastating blow to the queer community, can you imagine how much this would cost taxpayers in having to deal with paperwork and restructuring everything with current same-sex marriages in place?
This political attack on the queer community through corporations is already having an effect as sponsorships and advertising is being pulled away from LGBTQ media, events, and queer-centric non-profits. Some gay organizations are being hit hard but still moving forward. Minneapolis’s Twin Cities Pride refused its main sponsorship source and declined a $50K contribution from Target after its DEI policy elimination. Very interesting considering Target told LGBT Nation just last year, “Target is committed to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community during Pride Month and year-round,” the statement said. “Most importantly, we want to create a welcoming and supportive environment for our LGBTQIA+ team members, which reflects our culture of care for the over 400,000 people who work at Target. We have long offered benefits and resources for the community, and we will have internal programs to celebrate Pride 2024.” That all changed in less than a year? Boo.
