Hunky Handballer Villads Raahauge Jensen Comes Out

Each month, we are happy to report some athlete has come out as queer. As we know, openly gay athletes in sports are still struggling to gain traction and there is still stigma in the industry. But more and more sports folk are finally coming out of the closet, and we couldn't be happier. This last Olympics boasted the highest number of openly out athletes on record. The New Year started off with a bang with news that professional handballer (we hope freeballer too) Villads Raahauge Jensen has come out as gay.

This Denmark stud took to Instagram to declare, "“I am gay. Three words that should, in reality, be easy to say, but for many years, I’ve been afraid to be open about it." Check out the emotional post:

He goes on to state that handball has always been his first passion, and he was afraid to declare his sexuality before because it might have jeopordized that. He plays professional handball for Lugi HF in the Swedish Allsvenskan league.

He went on to state, "“Being gay in sports is, in many ways, still a taboo, without me really knowing why. I just know that, for me, it has been very difficult to be open about who I am."

Villads came out to the world and his teammates. He says that his teammates have been supportive with his coming out. He was out to his close friends and family already. He can now move forward being his authentic self. “Hiding a big part of who you are from almost everyone makes it so that you can never truly be 100% yourself.”

Villads also felt a responsbility to come out to inspire others in the industry to follow suit. Growing up, he had no queer representation to look up to.
