Easy & Sleek Men's New Year's Eve Fashion: What to Wear

New Year's Eve is quickly approaching and many of us still don't know what we are gonna wear. Some of us are reaching into the closet and realizing some of our fabulous looks aren't fitting the same after the holiday season of skipping the gym and eating the cookies. Oh well, we can still rock it! For others of us, this year has been tight on the wallet, and going out and buying the latest looks isn't quite within our reach, we have to make do with what we have. We wanted to share some quick tips and ideas that you can incorporate into what you have to pull off a sleek and easy New Year's Eve outfit that will make you look both great and fashionable.

Let's start with the basics that most of us have in our closet:

Dress Pants and Dress Shirt (more formal)

If you work as a waiter or a valet, have attended a funeral, or have passed puberty, no doubt you have one pair of black pants and a dress shirt in your closet. If not, get them. There are tons of holiday sales at every level of department store, so you can easily get this pair for a good price. All you have to make this a New Year's Eve outfit is to add any combo of accessories. The key is to add two of the following accessories: a flashy tie (bow ties are more party-minded), slim suspenders, a scarf, and flashy shoes. Here's a hint for the super budget-conscious - your local thrift store (for us gays local to Out of the Closet, that is your best bet) will have tons of odd pieces with a lot of personality. Going vintage with any of these also adds an element of style and personality. Choose two pieces as they will be highlighted as a stand out from your starting black pants and dress shirt. Mix up patterns, there are no rules for this holiday night. Be bold.

T-shirt and Jeans (more casual)

Ok, going for the more casual look but still want to look sleek? One word. Jacket. You can do leather, embroidered, leather, whatever kind of stylish jacket will add a nice New Year's Eve touch. Bomber jackets come in all styles and colors, from varsity style to super chic. Patterns and colors will make you pop out and add that element of style you want. Don't have time to hit the stores? Amazon has a big collection of men's bombers. Leather jackets can be fancy or vintage, and again, thrift stores might have some retro ones for a budget. Here's the key to just adding a jacket to your outfit: to not look like a chump, make sure your t-shirt is fitted to your body - no loose or baggy shirts. Don't just stick to white, add some depth with a darker shirt if it matches your bomber. Also, make sure your jeans are clean, pressed (trust us), and fit well. Super skinny jeans are out, don't even try them. Super skinny jeans legs and a bomber will make you look like Grut from Despicable Me. To add even more style, had a nice neck chain (nothing super flashy or fake-looking). The fun thing about this look, if you've gained a few pounds the bulk of the jacket will hide most muffin tops.

Dress Pants and Dress Shirt (most formal)

Surprise! Yes, you can use your staple dark pair of dress pants and dress shirt for this one too! Just add a nice blazer or dinner jacket. They also come in a variety of colors and patterns, have fun for New Year's Eve! The key to this look is to get a blazer that fits well. There are high-end fashion jackets you can get, but there are also many to be found at Men's Wearhouse and Macy's. Again, don't forget your local thrift store to find something with some personality! By adding a nice jacket, you can opt-out for the tie. A crisp dress shirt open at the collar will still look formal but give you an edge.

For all of these looks, shoes can make or break an outfit. If you can't splurge for expensive shoes, make sure the shoes you are wearing are NOT square-toed, are polished, and are appropriate for your outfit. A pair of black wingtips pretty much go with anything, even jeans. There are even shoe brands that make wingtips that can go between casual and fancy. Again, you can find a pair at your local thrift store if your budget is tight. Two words: SHOE POLISH!
