The Queer How To: The Art of Cruising

For those of us who are old enough to remember good old-fashioned cruising, long before Grindr and Sniffies, there was a thrill to the hunt and the hookup. Now, it is easy to order in from the comfort of your own home. But cruising is part of our gay culture, it is part of our history, and it was damn fun! This column is inspired by what happened last night, a true cruising scene. At the gas station, gay looks at gay, gay notices the other gay's huge bulge, they head into the bathroom, zippers are unzipped, and boom! Cruising. There's a lot to be said for putting your phone away and hookup by sights and senses. Here's our recap on the art of cruising.

First of all, you should know what the best places are to cruise. Some scenarios don't fit the bill. We don't recommend cruising at church or at the DMV. But there are places that are just prone to cruising.

The Gym

This one is a duh. Of course, you are going to notice the guy doing dumbbell squats or the guy running on the treadmill with his huge package bouncing around. You are also there to workout and show off. All you have to do is clock who is clocking you. Then you discreetly move your workout next to them. Then you head to the lockerroom and show off what you got in the shower. Gym hookups are a big thing. And, if you didn't want to take the public risk of the showers, you can head to your car and finalize the deal. Gym head is our favorite!

Large Apartment Buildings

We aren't talking about a duplex or even a ten-unit complex. We are talking about large apartment building complexes. Cruising happens here more often than you'd imagine. There are dark stairwells, rooftop sheds, a mail room, and a laundry room, and the possibilities for a quick hookup are endless.

Parks

Again, we aren't talking about a small park with a slide and a water fountain. We are talking major city parks. Guys will walk around freeballing to show off. Take your walk around the park and see who is looking. Duck behind a bush or a tree and you have some hot outdoor sex possibilities. Nights work better than daytime.

Campus

Teachers and college students are all running around horny. Just check your Sniffies and you'll see a lot of cruising happening on college campuses. The restrooms, the dorms, the music room, what have you, are all open for use.

How To Cruise

There is an art to cruising. First, you have to find out if a hot guy is into it, then you have to see if he is into you. Eye contact is the key. If someone holds your glance for more than three seconds, they want to fool around. If they look at you briefly then move on and don't initiate eye contact again, that's a big no. A little nod or smile towards your intended isn't a bad thing. Be playful. This shows you want to be naughty but also shows you have a personality. Be prepared to cruise. Have some travel lube and a condom. Also, be hygienically clean if you want to get rimmed or fucked. Also, you should have a section of your closet for cruising outfits. Sweatpants, shorts, a simple t-shirt or tank, you don't want to have to worry about belts and layers if you need to get in or out of the action quickly.
