Agatha All Along: Our First Look...It's Gay!

Ok, we are gonna be honest. We aren't a fan of Marvel stuff, like at all. Even with all those hot guys in spandex running around, we just can't seem to get into it. But somehow we got dragged into Disney+'s Wandavision and we were hooked. If you are fans of the actual comics, you know the Wanda verse is a bit queer. We loved that the show was outside of the box, was a bit camp, and played to our intelligent senses. Don't hate us, but the big Marvel films just seem a bit vapid and stupid. Anyway...what we really loved about Wandavision was runaway star Kathryn Hahn as the witch Agatha. Remember that meme that went viral?

So were elated when Disney+ announced they are doing a show just about Agatha. And then they announced Patti Lupone was in it. Then they announced that openly gay actor Joe Locke (from Heartstoppers) was going to be in it, playing a gay twink. Oh, and that it would have a musical number or two. YASSSSS! Of course, we had to sit by the tube and watch the two-episode premiere of Agatha All Along at 6 pm sharp last night. Although we were disappointed that the episodes were so short, and there are only 9 episodes, we were not disappointed by the show. It is delicious, it is fabulous, it's a bit queer without shouting it out, and it fulfThe fulfills all of our Halloween fantasies.

Will the show win any awards? No. Is it earth-shattering? No. But it is fun as fuck and that's all it needs to be. It has all of the texture of Wandavision, in fact, we see the same sets and the Scarlet Witch is mentioned plenty of times, but it has an energy all on its own. It starts out much like Wandavision in a show within a show motif, and then it explodes into the wonderful world of Agatha and she slowly comes back into her powers. The show takes place three years after the facts of Wandavision, and the premise is simple, almost Wizard of Oz-like. Agatha, needing a coven of misfit witches to join her, must travel the Witch Road to regain her powers. Also, Joe Locke as her queer protege joins the fun. Not giving too much away, the Road is conjured by a full-out, harmonized musical number (with Tony Award Winner Patti Lupone stealing the spotlight), and episode two leaves us with them taking off their shoes and running down the yellow brick road (it's not yellow, FYI). Kathryn as Agatha is chewing up the scenery and looks like she is having the time of her life. Oh, we forgot to mention that Aubrey Plaza joins the festivities as a kick-ass villain and we literally cheered when she starting using her powers in a cat's meow girl fight.

Aubrey Plaza has been quoted during interviews saying this might be the gayest Marvel project ever. We agree and what we love about it, it can be super queer without being super queer. If that makes sense. Witches have a queer sensibility in that they are fabulous but also society outcasts. Then they wear fabulous outfits and have sassy one-liners. Joe Locke says about his gay character, "Teen is a queer guy on the show, but it’s not the driving force, which I think is really great. It’s really nice to just have these positive queer characters.” And we couldn't agree. All of the cast members say to wait for the ride, as it gets gayer. This maybe the positive money maker for Marvel to finally get into its head that gay superheroes should be explored like their actual comic book intentions. Stop queer washing our content for your big-budget crap!

Pour yourself a pumpkin spice martini, grab a blanket, and just enjoy Agatha All Along. Happy Halloweenie!!!
