Sexualities in the Spotlight: What Is Abrosexuality?

For those of us a bit older, coming out meant you were gay or straight. If you said you were bisexual, that only meant you weren't ready to be fully gay. A lot has changed even over the last decade, and now there are a myriad of sexualities that people identify with. A new one we heard of this week was abrosexuality, and we wanted to deep dive into what this term means.

Even though our spell check keeps wanting to change abrosexuality to bisexuality, that isn't quite it, although at times an abrosexual can identify as bisexual. Abrosexuality is a person whose sexuality changes and fluctuates over time. It also designates someone who goes through different levels of sexuality, meaning you can feel sexual for a period of time, then feel nothing for another period of time. You could be attracted to men this month, and attracted to women next month, or attracted to both months later. It is ever-changing and evolving. At one point, you could want one partner, at another point, you could want multiple partners, and at other points, no partners at all.

How does being abrosexual differ from being pansexual? Being pansexual means you are attracted to all types, genders, and sexuality. It is consistently fluid. Abrosexuality is not just a blanket fluidity. An abrosexual may feel pansexual at times, and at other times not.

Identifying as abrosexual may be difficult for some people as friends, family, and partners may not understand the changing nature of this sexuality. As of now, there are over 100 sexualities that have been defined. At some point, an abrosexual may identify as all of them. It can also cause trust issues in a relationship as your attraction to your partner may change more frequently than being bi, pan, or homosexual. It is not just a mood change, your sexual makeup literally changes fully to the next transition. Some people say a change can happen over days, or even over years. There is no set time limit as to the sexual attraction shift.

The term abrosexual comes from the Greek root abro meaning “delicate” or “graceful" and refers to the gentle nature of changes that someone may go through. Many people who identify as such will just use the term sexually fluid because it is easier understood by others, but it doesn't have all the attributes of being abrosexual.
