Movie News: Tons of Stephen King, Disney On the Way, the Crow Reboot Bombs
I'm your Gay News Guy – this is the news, casual, sassy, unfiltered, and a little hungover. Ok here’s this week's movie news as I see it!
Deadpool & Wolverine climbed back up to #1 at the box office this weekend, with Alien: Romulus having a second strong weekend in 2nd place. Blake Lively’s It Ends with Us rounded out third place. Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut, Blink Twice starring Channing Tatum, had a dismal fourth place opening. The Crow reboot had a terrible debut weekend, opening at 8th place. Yikes!
Did you know that there’s a Toxic Avenger reboot movie out there? Peter Dinklage plays the lead with Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon in the cast. It showed at a few festivals in 2023, but it’s stuck in limbo without a release. In an interview, Dinklage doesn’t know why it hasn’t been released in a major way yet even though it has been a hit with screening audiences. We want to see it!
Keanu Reeves was in the running to play Master Sol in Star Wars Acolyte. He dodged a bullet as the show was canceled due to a dismal response from fans and critics. He is still being talked about in joining the Star Wars universe. There are a number of TV shows and movies in the works, so there’s plenty of opportunities to cast him. We’d love to see his lightsaber.
Hottie actor Skyler Gisondo will be playing Jimmy Olsen in the new Superman movie. Director James Gunn gave the first reveal from set. Damn, he’s so adorable.
Happy Anniversary to Superman’s pal, Jimmy Olsen, who debuted on this day in 1941 (although he did appear earlier as “office boy” in Action Comics 6). Created by Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster & Bob Maxwell. I can’t wait for you to see @SkylerGisondo’s portrayal in #Superman on July… pic.twitter.com/PG7DdF7QSL

Brandy is the latest original star of I Know What You Did Last Summer in talks to join the reboot movie along with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. We love some 90s film aesthetic and we think this might be a fun campy romp. And Freddie has reached hot daddy status.
Jamie Foxx will play the lead in the Spawn reboot movie. The Oscar winner has been signed on to the film since 2018, but it has been held up with script rewrites and has been in limbo. It seems that the movie is getting back on track to being made.
Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but it looks like Pixar is looking to develop ideas for Inside Out 3. The sequel did extremely well at the box office, breaking records for the year in movies. They should add the emotion Horny. LOL.
In other Disney news, Frozen 3 and Frozen 4 will be made at the same time. Developing both films at the same time will cut down wait time in between the animated franchise, meaning more money faster. They did the same thing with the Avatar sequels.
Stephen King is writing a horror short film for an upcoming series featuring female directors in a series of scary shorts for YouTube. Kate Siegel, who starred in Haunting Of Hill House and Midnight Mass will make her directorial debut for this King short.
In other Stephen King news, Mike Flanagan will direct The Life of Chuck, based on King’s novella. It stars Mark Hamill, Tom Hiddleston, and Matthew Lillard. It is not a horror movie per se, but has supernatural elements and Flanagan says he is looking to direct an emotional and sweeping piece, drawing from The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me.
In even more Stephen King news, the new version of Salem’s Lot will hit Max in October, just in time for the Halloween season. This movie is produced by James Wan who also brought us The Conjuring, and Malignant.
Musical theatre nerds! Rumors are swirling that Kristin Chenoweth has a cameo in the upcoming Wicked film. Some eagle-eyed gays noticed a character that resembled the actress in the background. Chenoweth played Glinda in the original Broadway production.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s big reunion for the film Wolfs is being cut short. Apple changed plans for a theatrical release, and will instead do a limited one-week release and stream the movie on the streaming service. Apple hasn’t had much success in big-screen releases this year, so fiscally it makes sense although the two lead stars are almost a sure thing.
A remake of Jennifer Lopez’s Anaconda is in the works. But, it will be a comedy and Jack Black and Paul Rudd are in talks to star. The original is funny, but unintentionally so. We’d love to see Paul Rudd’s anaconda.
