Porn Star Careers: Nailing the Audition
We continue to get your questions about how to get into the adult industry. Here at Fleshbot, we've rubbed elbows and chatted with just about everyone in the biz. We've learned a thing or two about making in this crazy industry. As part of our ongoing Getting Into the Adult Biz column, we will continue to chat with movers and shakers in the adult world who can shed light on becoming a success in studio work. Last time we checked in, we talked about submitting to a studio and gave the best tips on how to get noticed during the submission process. In this round, we talked to ASGmax's Jeremy, the Chief Creative Officer, and Melissa in casting. Melissa conducts the first phase of the interview process and will forward notes and a video of each model to Jeremy. That, along with the initial application and socials, will determine who comes in to shoot. Check out the tips of the trade that they have to share with any aspiring adult actors.

What does one wear to a first interview with a studio?
Melissa: Honestly, whatever makes them feel comfortable, if they want to be shirtless they can. But just come as you are.
Jeremy: Be yourself! Look how you plan to look when you walk on set. Groomed and clean-cut could help seal the deal and get you in the door sooner.
What should a model come prepared with?
Melissa: Not sure if there is anything to prepare for the interview, just be ready to talk about how you see yourself fitting into the industry
Jeremy: Be in a quiet space without distractions. Show you’ve set aside some time to chat.
What does a typical model interview look like from your perspective?
Melissa: I love getting to interview, you get to see a side of them that photos don’t show. It’s simple, I ask some questions about your likes, dislikes, turn-ons, turn-offs, favorite position, what character they think they could play naturally, etc. Then they get a rundown of our booking process and what a day on set could look like.
Jeremy: After Melissa does an interview, she asks the models to submit a video. That’s where I come in. I get to see about a minute of the guys talking to the camera. This is a HUGE piece where personality and charm can help seal the deal.
What are some of the main things you are looking for in a model in person, and not just from their pics?
Melissa: Besides photos that show off your assets, we look for models who are open-minded, ready for some fun, and ready to challenge themselves. Oh, 3 for 3 doesn’t hurt - face, body, and dick.
Jeremy: One of the biggest X-factors for us is charm. That “guy next door” quality that isn’t just looking great, but also being that guy that people want to hang out with.
What are the big “nos” that a model should refrain from doing?
Melissa: Super egotistical, every studio is a bit different, gotta be able to adapt to change.
Jeremy: If you are boring in an interview… you’re going to be boring on camera, too. Show some personality.
What are some of the big red flags you look for during the interview process?
Melissa: Not very talkative, has no specific turn-ons or turn-offs, we are looking for models who have a personality.
Jeremy: Lack of personality, bad hygiene, drastic changes from the photos submitted.
What are some tips for a model so they stand out and make it through the interview process?
Melissa: Be friendly, open-minded, and show us how eager you are to work with us
Jeremy: Like Melissa said. Show us you’re interested. Show up on time, give thoughtful answers, and submit your video responses quickly.
How long after an interview should a model hear back?
Melissa: It depends on the process really, some can get in right away because they have everything we are looking for, and some are good, but might not make the cut right away, and some unfortunately don’t have what it takes.
Jeremy: It can be hours or months. Some guys you want NOW. They’re home-run guys that our audience will love, but most guys are someplace in the middle. Every model is a gamble for us, and you’re in a pool with a bunch of other guys. How you pair with planned models is just the luck of the draw and lucky timing.
What is the next step after a model passes the interview process?
Melissa: Usually we put them on a list, and once we can figure out good dates for us, we’ll reach out to the model to tell them the good news.
Jeremy: We have limited spots, so it’s a lot of us negotiating internally to decide who pairs well and who we think our members will like.
What should a model work on from being chosen from an interview to debuting their first scene?
Melissa: Keep working on your body, we want you to come camera-ready, looking your best to impress.
Jeremy: BE CONSISTENT. We are hiring the guy who applied. If you change up your facial hair, body hair, piercings, tattoos, body composition – that’s going to affect what we planned for you. If you do change things up, it’s super important to let us know.
If a model doesn’t get chosen from the interview process, what should they do next?
Melissa: That’s a tough one, as I wish we could work with everyone, but they shouldn’t give up hope, and I am sure there is a studio out there that is right for them.
Jeremy: Find studios that have models that look like you. If it’s not us, find a studio where they’re casting goals line up with your personal look. Their members might be interested in you, which means their casting team will be too.
Any overall advice for nailing your first audition?
Melissa: Come open-minded, it’s okay to be nervous; flashy lights, naked in front of new people, cameras. I get it, but I can promise our crew is professional & ready to help newbies get their foot in the door, we’ll give you tips on how to succeed with us if you can apply what the director is instructing in the scene. Then try your best! We are here to help you succeed with us. We wouldn’t book you if we didn’t see potential so let that shine!
Jeremy: Hot counts for a lot, but we want a personality, too. If you can charm the team in the interview process, that goes a LONG way toward giving us that motivation to bring you in. If we really like you, we’ll take that change on our members liking you, too.
