Tim Walz Running As VP for Kamala, What's His LGBTQ History?

After much speculation, Kamala Harris has named her Vice President running mate. The gays were clamoring for Pete Buttigieg but, let's be honest, that ticket wouldn't fly, especially when on the fence conservatives shy away from anything that is "too woke." But, at least the conversation was being had, and Petey was being vetted. We are sure that he will be a big contender down the line. Imagine having our first gay President? Pride every day! Yaasss! Anywho, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has waltzed into our lives and now the queer community is firing up the Google to see how LGBTQ-friendly he is. Relax, he's fam.

First of all, he got a stunning endorsement from his own territory from Outfront Minnesota, a leading queer organization working towards equality through public policy, legal and individual advocacy, and education. Outfront Executive Director Kat Rohn told The Advocate, "As a former teacher, he's always seen LGBTQ+ rights through the lens of welcoming everyone in the classroom. This approach extends to his governance, where he believes in the value and dignity of every individual, regardless of their identity.”

Flashback to his days as a high school teacher when Walz served as the founding advisor for that school's GSA. Three years ago, he instituted an executive order banning conversion therapy, making Minnesota one of the first states to do so. He has also supported the legislature striving to make Minnesota a refuge state for the trans community. There are a number of pro-Harris LGBTQ rallies in Minnesota that were planned before the VP announcement, and now that support and energy are amplified.

Walz has a record of supporting legislation that supports queer youth in foster care. He has also taken care to place members of the LGBTQ community in high positions in his administration. He has also been present at Prides and taken part in Pride parades. He has taken action both in front of and behind the scenes. Gender-affirming care is protected for the trans community because of a bill he signed into action.

He also was involved in getting the military "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repealed. He also supported the Respect for Marriage Act, helping same-sex marriage become legal across the US. Walz was involved in the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, protecting gender identity, sexual orientation, and disabilities legally.

In general, Walz will likely also gain support from moderate liberals as he is a veteran, he's a family man, has been a sports coach, and is focused on supporting the middle class.
