Movie News: Minions, Chris Farley, Practical Magic, Shrek, & More!
I’m your Gay News Guy – this is the news, casual, sassy, unfiltered, and a little hungover. Ok here’s this week's MOVIE NEWS as I see it!
The box office this weekend was a grab bag! Despicable Me 4 reigned at #1, Nicholas Cage’s new thriller Longlegs debuted at #2 (being the best horror opening weekend of the year), Inside Out 2 holding strong at #3, and the Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson Fly Me to the Moon rom-com not faring well at all, barely scraping in $10 million in comparison to the $100 million budget! Oy! Family movies and horror, got it!
Speaking of the Despicable Me franchise, Minions 3 is in development. Despicable Me director also says that a Despicable Me 5 is probable. Is that too many Minions too soon?
In other animation news, Shrek 5 is happening and will come out in 2026. Cameron Diaz, Mike Myers, and Eddie Murphy are all coming back. The last sequel was way back in 2010!
The Gladiator 2 movie trailer dropped! Check it out and tell us what you think. The film stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington.
In behind-the-movies news, Alec Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter case was dismissed, and he’s free from the court dealings regarding the unfortunate death on the set of his Western, Rust. The film was finished and will be coming out. His fans were very supportive on social media.
Josh Gad will be directing a Chris Farley biopic that will star Golden Globe and Emmy Award Winner Paul Walter Hauser. Chris Farley’s family has given the film a thumbs up and Lorne Michaels will executive produce.
The Conjuring series is getting a finale send-off with The Conjuring 4. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will be returning as the Warrens, but this will be the last film from this mainline. It will be released September 25, 2025.
Souvenir popcorn buckets have become all the rage this year (truth be told, I paid $45 for the Ghostbusters ghost trapper), with Dune 2 and the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movies causing a stir with their bucket designs. AMC released a peek-a-boo image of their bucket for Alien: Romulus. While not as sexy as the others, it’s still awesome!

Everyone is excited about the re-pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman for Deadpool & Wolverine, but don’t get too excited. Ryan Reynolds made it clear this last week that it is not a set up for more sequels. Boooooo! Although we know what kind of box office hit this will probably be and we know that studios will do anything to scoop up more money, so time will tell.
Demi Moore’s new horror flick The Substance just dropped its trailer. We all know that Demi continues to look stunning. Funny enough, in this movie, she will be going to extreme lengths to keep looking young.
The gays squealed for joy when the Practical Magic 2 movie was announced. The original has become a cult movie among the queers. More details have come out about the sequel. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are coming back, it will be released sometime in 2025, and it will be a direct retelling of the book sequel, The Book of Magic. The original screenwriter is returning as well.
Ridley Scott’s Napolean was not a success. Regardless, there’s a director cut on the way that is rumored to be four hours long! Not sure what the point is, we could barely get through it at its original run time. FOUR HOURS? We’d rather watch eight episodes of The Office again.
The old Hollywood vets still got it! Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, and Ben Kingsley will play retirement home tenants who solve cold cases to pass the time. The movie is titled The Thursday Murder Club and will be directed by Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter).
Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Sir Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie star in The Thursday Murder Club. Now in production. Based on Richard Osman's bestselling novel and directed by Chris Columbus.

Emilio Estevez finished the script for a Young Guns 3 and he and Lou Diamond Phillips have been in talks regarding the sequel, but the studio that holds the rights has the project on hold. Um, the last sequel was in 1990. Um…they aren’t “Young” anymore. Old Guns 1 maybe?
Most of us had to read Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights in English Lit. Well, Saltburn director Emerald Fennell. This will be the 14th adaptation of the novel. Let’s hope it’s full of hot guys and a bath tub jizz scene!
