Kesha Celebrates Independence with New Music: Joy Ride

With our nation on the brink of falling apart and as we continue to lose our equal rights footing in the nation, what much is there to celebrate this 4th of July? How about some new Kesha music celebrating independence? Yaassss! Today, our favorite little mess dropped "Joy Ride" to give all the gay parties and BBQs a bop.

Last weekend Kesha surprised the gays at NY's Planet Pride 2024 and debuted the song. Kesha over the years has become one of our favorite gay obsessions. Is it her party ways, is it her unconventional approach to music, is it her eff you attitude? Yes to all, hennie. She kicked off Pride Month with her amazing performance at Weho Pride and will continue to pop up on stages all over the place for gay and straight events for the rest of the summer.

Kesha first hit the scene in early 2009 when she was featured on rapper Flo Rida's number-one single, "Right Round." The next year, her debut album Animal came out and the rest is herstory. She has earned 10 top 10 singles, literally billions of streams, two #1 albums, and about 40 million followers on social media. She's been nominated twice for a Grammy. She's been a queer activist as well as an animal rights advocate.

Her new single "Joy Ride" not only celebrates independence day, but also her own independence. This is the first chapter in a new era for the artist as she is now her own label. She began a legal dispute with her former producer Dr. Luke in 2014. It took almost ten years for the case to be settled, with Kesha accusing him of all forms of abuse and he claiming she breached her contract. As of June 2023, she is free from the entanglements of the case and she is now unapologetically on her own.

Ok, soooo..."Joy Ride." Our take? Gurllll, it is just what we needed to get us in the party mood today. It is so essentially Kesha. For those of us who grew up on Animal, we are happy for that throwback sound and Kesha personality. The bop also has its pulse on the hot beats of today and it's chock full of clapbacks that the gays will eat up.

Are you a man? Cuz I’m a bitch I’m already rich Just looking for that mmmmm This party sucks I’m 'bout to ditch Don’t even try to gi-give me shit, I’ve earned the right to b-be like this Oh, you say you love me? that’s funny,  Well, so do I

Oh yeah, this is the Kesha we know and love. Cue the drag queens adding it to every performance. Check it out:

Happy 4th!
