JoJo Siwa Gets Booed at NYC Pride
We don't even know what to say at this point. It seems that the media, the gay community, and entertainment lovers alike have a love/hate relationship with um, pop star? Reality TV star? Musician? Dancer? What do we call her at this point, because it seems that lately JoJo Siwa is just missing the mark and may be a bit problematic for the queer community. The saying goes, "there's no such thing as bad press." Ummm...is that JoJo Siwa's team's motto? And who is exactly running her act? Her mom was always by her side during her time on Dance Moms, but how is she letting this pop celeb run amok?
The media was all abuzz when she released her new single, "Karma," and unveiled her new, quasi-goth, Hot Topic sale redo saying she was coming into her adulthood. Most of us made fun, but her social media boomed and she was covered by almost every media outlet and gave interviews for major media platforms. The song, while made fun of, boomed.

Then a ridiculous interview happened where she said she wanted to create gay pop. Ok, little one, sit down and do some research. While she tried to clarify what she was really saying, the damage was done.

Then JoJo turned 21 and got majorly drunk at Disney World and had an embarrassing display with a group of people who didn't know her new single.

Ok, we all drink on our 21st birthday, so whatever. Then those of us who saw her at LA Pride got a meh performance while she touted a full bottle of Tito's on stage. Some came after her saying she was fake drinking and doing it all for shock value. What was shocking was that no one told her to at least pretend she was really singing. Still, those of us in the audience were either really cheering along or were making fun. But, all eyes were on her and everyone was posting on social media. But is that the only point of being a queer performer? Is that what her definition of new gay pop means?

On her social media, she claims to have set records at Miami and Chicago Pride. If that is true, are people coming to make fun or are they fans?

So that brings us to this last weekend when JoJo performed at Trixie Mattel’s Pride Disco show in New York City's Central Park. While some threw a bra and flowers on stage, there was a contingent who booed her. She wandered around the stage demanding to know who it was. She then shouted, "Respectfully, f--- you!" Apparently, there were children right at the front. Check out the video:

Is this the kind of representation the queer community needs? Especially during this political and social climate? We've had artists like Lil Nas X and Sam Smith push the envelopes, but somehow it seems that it comes from a sincere and artistic place. This just looks like an attention-grabbing shit show. But that's just our take. We will see how things play out when her new single, "Guilty Pleasure," comes out next month. I'm sure the parents of all her kid fans just love what she's doing.
